cat peeing around the house...

Hi all,

to cut a long story short i rescued a 1 year old cat from a breeder, she is a cross Persian and came to me very scared and would not come out for about 3 weeks, and as time passed she became very loving and a much happier girl.

three weeks ago she went in for neutering, about 2 day after she started to pee around the home, so i've been cleaning up after her with white vinegar however this did not help. i have had to remove all the rugs from my home and am trying to keep up with cleaning sofa's and wot not. but nothing worked, so i refused her space to a small area and still this has not worked, i went in to her this morning to feed her and she ran out and peed straight away on the foot mat by the door, i chased her off which was prob the right thing to do as she started to growl at me  she is now hiding, didn't even come out for her food which she loves. i've changed her litter, got a bigger litter tray that she is using, but she will come out and just pee anywhere, on my sofa while i watch, on the bed covers... should i not chase her off if i catch her? i really dont want to loose her but i dont want a home that smells of pee....

Please please any help would be great as i love her dearly and am starting to feel like a bad owner, please help

First of all, don't chase her off!

Second, have you mentioned this to the vet? If you haven't, get on the phone to your vet now. Even if you have, still phone and say that you are really struggling with it and you want her checked again.

and can i just say that she hates the carry case, she spent the first year of her life in a cage, so getting her in the carry case is traumatic for her and me....

No, do not just let her off with it. How have you been training her? Have you tried water spray training or the 'no and down' training?

Is she the only cat or are there others?

Also getting her used to the carrier case will really help you, leave the out so that it's not associated with the vets. Maybe try every time she goes near it give her a treat and a pat then she'll start to associate it with good things, not bad.

Get another vets opinion too and just keep pestering them, the timing just doesn't seem right here at all!

to be honest i have never had to train her, she was clean from day 1... it was just after she was nurtured that it started... so i am now spraying white vinegar around the floor where she has been peeing but with no change. so no, if you know of a good site with training tips please pass it on.

she is the only cat i have her name is breeze, ATA foxy lady as she has a foxes tail....

i just called my vet who thinks i should wait another mouth to she how she goes, so i called another vet who has asked me to bring her in on tuesday and they are going to give me some cat litter that they can use to check her pee, they think she is having hormone issues and said that its quite common with nurtured cats that were close or in season???

so a new vet on tuesday....

I agree, this sounds very much like an infection to me, particularly as it started so soon after the op. Get a second opinion from your vet. Chasing her off etc will only make her worse, as it will stress her, which can contribute to cystitis. Do get her to the vet soon, this sounds miserable for her and for you. And make sure they take this seriously.

PS - we cross posted. "Wait another month"?? Are they serious??? No, take no nonsense, get her to the vet, or better still, find a different vet. "We can't find anything wrong" is not good enough.

When ever she does something that you do not want her to do, (as in my case with my Comet - climbing the curtains) give her a little spray of water from a squish bottle and say "no" or even hiss if you want to. With time she will learn to associate the horrible spray of water with the unwanted behaviour.

I am very glad that you can be seen by another vet on Tuesday! I hope that they find out what is wrong with Breeze, treat it and that she makes a full recovery. It really is horrible when we feel we are at our wits end with our kitties :(

Thanks guys,

The new vet's were very understanding, i just don't know what this other vets are playing at...

I will give you all an update once she has been to the new vets on Tuesday.

Thanks again, and i\ll never go back to the vets that nurtured her again..

While the water spray can be a useful training aid in some circumstances, your cat is stressed enough as it is, and spraying her will only make things worse. It certainly won't deter her from behaviour she really can't help at the moment, particularly if it's caused by infection. She's not doing this to be disobedient, she's as unhappy about it as you are. She needs to be in a calm environment until you can get to the bottom of what's causing this. Is there any chance you can get her to the vet before Tuesday? 4 days is a long time to wait if it turns out it's an infection and she's in pain, and it may get worse meanwhile.

i wont be using the water spray until i am sure it's not a health issues, she is cuddled up right now by my feet, i live alone and have very few visitors so i'm not worried about too much stress. apart from the stress i have caused her by cleaning up after her and not allowing access to the bedroom as she peeing over everything. but at night i will leave the bed door open so she can come in if she wants, which i'm sure she will.

apart from an emergency appointment i cant get in sooner, and sadly due to lack of work i really cant afford what there asking for an emergency appointment. especially after speding 40 pounds to be told she fine?!?!?!?!

the only other option is calling the PDSA, but i dont know if there help?

The PDSA or Blue Cross may help with the cost but I don't know how you go about it - perhaps give them a ring first to enquire. It does sound very much like an infection after the surgery so hopefully the new vet will give her some medication. She has probably been very stressed by the whole episode if she is as scared of the carrier and vets as my cat is. We had to have her sedated for her last vet visit just to trim her claws!
