I just wanted to pop by and update folks on my cat Flo's progress. For those who kindly responded to my earlier thread back in November; Flo has made a super recovery, her damaged leg has regained pretty much full functioning and her mobility is great. She has gone from barely able to climb the stairs to bounding up them at lightning speed!
I had a few issues with her 'fur mowing' near where her tail was removed and its uncertain whether she had nerve damage or whether it was stress. Had to keep her in the cone of shame on and off for months while we tried some different meds but her obsessive licking has now ceased.
I have a new dilemma now as to whether I can allow her to go back out again. She shows some interest in going outdoors but I would worry about her coming to harm again. Do you think her ordeal would have made her more cautious near roads or is it kinder to keep her as a house cat?

I would say, if the road is very busy and Flo is happy indoors, she should be fine as an indoor only cat. But our tripod Bobby would HATE it. We live on a country road - not much traffic but they do go fast. I do worry about him when I see him near the gate, but he is such a happy boy when he is outside.

It is lovely that Flo has made such a good recovery. Do we get some pictures?

I had a cat who was run over twice (luckily survived with bruises only, both times), but it still didn't stop him going on the road. Sadly they don't always learn from experience. We lost him to cancer eventually, but I lived in constant fear of him coming to grief with another car. But he would have torn the house apart with boredom and frustration as a housecat, so keeping him in wasn't an option.

Its good that is still pretty wintry as it gives me some time to decide what to do about letting her out. I might explore the option of making my back garden cat proof but I am not sure she really has the road sense to keep herself safe. My previous cat lived for 17 years accident-free whereas Flo was with me just 4 months before her accident (I adopted her adopted from cat's protection aged 2 so I don't know what her previous experience is) I think my last cat Titch was more streetwise as she had a feral streak to her!
