We Have a Bin Thief..
So our two kitties, Edgar and Clarence absolutely love the great outdoors, however.. Clarence has taken to coming home with naughty food he has stolen!
It first happened a few weeks ago on our bin night in which he came home with a guey substance matted in his whiskers, i wiped it off and locked the cat flap to stop him going out for the remainder of the night.. however an hour later i heard a crash and he has broken free (naughty little monkey) and was off out the garden on the hunt for the bins!!
So yesterday i am sitting in the living room and he comes in with what i though was a mouse, i shot up to remove it and it turns out he was munching on a crumpet!! So now the issue isn't confined to bin nights, someone round here is having their bins rummaged daily and i have no idea what i can do to stop it..
I came in today licking his lips with what looked like milk round his mouth!
unsurprisingly he has a really upset tummy...I am worried this is the start of quite a big problem and genuinely have no idea what I can do to stop him.
Has anyone ever experienced this type of extreme bin thieving that could offer some advice??

I well remember looking through my kitchen window into my neighbour's kitchen and seeing my Siamese on their kitchen table tucking into a roast chicken
at least your boy is waiting until your neighbours have thrown the food out

Whoops!! Did they find out?Kay wrote:I well remember looking through my kitchen window into my neighbour's kitchen and seeing my Siamese on their kitchen table tucking into a roast chicken.

I have an ex stray tom cat, Daz, who is a serial scavenger and bin raider. He's also been known to steal sausages off the neighbour's barbeque! We make sure all our bins are secure, and I did find out that one neighbour was having their bins raided, so they got a new bin with a secure lid. I offered to pay for half, but they were very nice and declined. Thankfully, we've now moved to a much more rural area and he now hunts more as there's less to scavenge, though he still does come in late some nights looking very replete and pleased with himself, and smelling of damp dog. No idea what that's about!!

Re: We Have a Bin Thief..
ahh so it seems its not so uncommon to have a serial bin thief!
Sausages off a Neighbours BBQ and Roast chicken straight from the kitchen table?! wow, Brave Cats!
So I guess I will have to just let him get on with it then, he is so proud of himself when he comes in licking his lips!

... That wasn't the end of it.
In total last night we had three sausage halves and this morning we had one more.
I am a little confused as to where he is getting them from as our bins were collected yesterday.
He is getting a right porky belly as well!

so who is getting the other half of these sausages? does he have a partner in crime?
or - surely not - is he grabbing his half off someone's fork

Re: We Have a Bin Thief..
haha yes he does have a partner in crime, that would be Edgar! if I could work out how to get the photo size down so I can upload pictures onto the forum I would upload a great one I took of them this morning sitting on a neighbours shed looking like they owned the place...
Someone pointed out to me today the recent poisoning in Norwich and London and it has concerned me. I can see the funny side of what they're doing but on a more serious point, what if they eat something that makes them seriously ill?
I have no idea how to stop them, my sister suggested asking the Vets but before I do that, does anyone here have an idea??

Re: We Have a Bin Thief..
I get this in the summer. Both of my cats raid my neighbours BBQs. If they leave meat cooking unattended, one or both of my rascals steal whatever they can get. They've had steak, chicken legs, salmon, prawns, sausages, ice cream and cheese. They seem to bring it home for me as a special treat. I try to keep them in if a BBQ is happening in the area but I can't be sure they don't sit there looking pathetic until someone feeds them. I've also had suspicions of bin raiding but the council has given us all big secure bins so this has stopped. I suppose it shows a level of intelligence that they do this.
