We're home, the vet said we know we're dealing with an infection because we've tested for it and it's come back positive so it's likely the eardrops are upsetting things so we're to stop them and see how he does. It might be they're sitting against the ear drum and upsetting his balance. She wants to rule out Toxoplasmosis as it can cause dizziness etc and it's the only thing we haven't tested for so far, results should be back in a couple of days. She still doesn't think he's in pain as such just doesn't know which way is up.

We're back on Friday to make a decision on the next steps, we could be looking at him seeing a dermatologist who would flush out the complete ear canal, this involves rupturing the ear drum so they can get a complete flush all the way through and it would remove any infection, gunk etc in there. Steps after that if it doesn't work would be to remove his ear canal which would obviously completely remove infection issues.

Keep your paws crossed this is just a blip!

Thank you for your good wishes and fusses which have been passed on. I think difficult decisions will have to be faced in terms of operations but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Hector has gone downhill overnight, I had to get him out from under the bed this morning so I could give him his meds and check him over, I brought him downstairs and he was all over the place. I'm just waiting for the referral practice to call me with a view to them seeing him as an emergency. Please send my boys your vibes :(

We have an appointment tomorrow at 1pm, we're seeing a soft tissue specialist who deals with ears and infections. We're going to Fitzpatrick Referrals as its only 30 minutes from home so the closet, let's hope they live up to the hype. Hector finally ate something but is still hiding :(

Sorry to hear that Mark, are you making any progress?

No the test results aren't back yet. Thank you for your good wishes, Hector had a comfortable night and doesn't seem any worse this morning, he even joined me on the bed for a cuddle last night but my fidgeting got too much and he went under the bed again! I'll update later x

They're keeping Hector in as they want to do an MRI scan on his ears and brain. They didn't think they'd be able to do it this afternoon as there was a queue in front of him so it will probably be in the morning. He was checked over by both the soft tissue guy and also a neurologist. They were very thorough, asked lots of questions and my boy was a superstar, the tissue guy had a resident with him and she said she'd never seen such a well behaved, purry boy.

They said this is unfortunately often how the disease progresses, the nose, ears, throat etc are all so closely linked it just moves onto the next area. There's a chance that once scanned they'll just need to clear the infection out of his ear and then blitz it with drugs to keep it from coming back. Worst case is that the infection has spread to his brain :( His co-ordination and movement suggest this might be the case as he didn't respond to some of the tests as they would expect but this could also be the ear infection so there's still hope.

I'll get a text in the morning to let me know how he's been overnight and then the soft tissue guy will call me after the scan, if there's anything that needs immediate attention he'll call me during it if they have to take biopsies etc.

He did say that we've done well to get him as far as this, most cats would have been PTS by now and between my vet and me his care has been excellent so that was nice to hear.

Cried all the way home :(

((((Hug))))

How awful for you both, but well done to Hector for being such a good boy.

I can imagine how you must be feeling - you have done really well getting home.

It's reassuring that they were impressed with the care Hector has had so far.

We continue to keep everything crossed that the infection has not spread.

Deep breath and a glass of wine for yourself xx

Brave Hector for behaving so well, he is in the right place and obviously getting the best of care, I know its not quite the news you were hoping for, but, as they have said, it maybe just the ear infection which has spread, my sisters cat was exactly the same, he used to walk with his head tilted to the side, they had the same fears too, but it turned out that Harrys ear infection had spread and become worse and further to his sinuses and throat and he was becoming more disorientated by the day, he could hardly stand up straight, he kept falling over, poor soul....he had an ear operation to 'blast' it as such and though he took a week or so to recover, he continued to live to the age of 21 ! He was 15 years old when he had the op....so lets all look on the positive side and send those positive thoughts to you and Hector.......I know it will be a long night for you, my heart goes out to you....xx

Hard as it must be, he is in the very best place possible right now. You've got him this far, all paws still crossed that they can help him further. (((hugs)))

As Val says, it is reassuring that they think he's been having the right treatment so far, and you must have been very proud of your brave boy. xx

I am very proud of my boy, he was so, so good not one grumble from him, just a little tail swishing. Perfectly well behaved and greeted all four of them with a purr and headbutt :)

One good thing about seeing The Supervet programme I know that they look after the animals really well and often spend time sitting with them, hopefully he'll get some of that treatment too.
