Occasional toileting around the house

Post by therock7507 »

Hi - one of my two 15 year old cats has suddenly started to go to the toilet - both liquids and solids - at various points in the house. Liquids is ALWAYS at the bottom of the stairs near the front door. Solids are in corners of rooms.

She does use her litter tray so its not avoidance.

Vet has checked her out and she is in good health for her age.

No recent major changes or upsets.

And it isn't all the time, but something like once a week on average.

Any ideas what can be causing it? We have a baby just crawling and learning to walk and on a few occasions have JUST, JUST stopped her from putting hands in it and then hands in mouth. Its scary. Cat may have to be rehomed or moved permanently outside.

Any help appreciated.

Any changes can upset a cat. You say the baby is just crawling could be that. Cats like to be able to get to their litter tray without anything that might upset them on the way. Cats think of people as hairless cats so maybe they are afraid of your baby.

Has your cat shown any aversion to your baby? IE confining themselves to certain rooms when the baby is near or urinating near or on where the baby sleeps?

Cats are very easily upset by change and could be upset by this new arrival to the household. I'm surprised you haven't had problems previously with the cat if this is the case.

Cats urinate or spray to mark their territory. Have you moved anything of theirs recently? Even just moving furniture or repainting a room is telling sign.
To deter spraying you can use things like Felliway to calm the cat down. They're useful plug-ins that you can use in places the cat most often visits.
