Cat ear tip abscess? Will it resolve on it's own? Pictures

Post by savethekitty »

Hello cat lovers!

The female cat that I got spayed at the local TNR has been doing great!

But these past few days I have noticed that the ear tip they cut was not smooth and something has been slowly growing.

It looks like a small balloon that has a scab at the top in the shape of a cone. The cone is probably puss that has been oozing out and mounting up.

Should I do something about it myself? Like try to remove the scab and put neosporin or some other local antiseptic?
Should I squeeze it (will it hurt her too much if squeezed) or just remove the scab and put the antiseptic?

OR leave it alone and hope it will resolve on it's own?

P.S: Grabbing her to get her in a carrier is near impossible without stressing this girl. She is still trying her best to trust me, but she went through a lot taking her to TNR and then for checkups on an open surgery site and eye laceration, so I don't want to stress her if there is a GOOD chance this will resolve on it's own. :)

Hi there and welcome. Poor girl, she can do without this, eh?

Would it be possible to call in at your vet's and show the desk staff (there's usually a nurse around) those pictures and explain the situation, that at the moment she's nearly impossible to get into a carrier. They shouldn't mind; most surgeries are happy to advise. They might be able to sell you something to bathe the ear with if she'll allow bathing, although as has been said before on the forum, old fashioned salt water (boiled water, salt added - teaspoonful to half a pint - allowed to cool to tepid) is a good home remedy.

If they do insist on her coming in, you could try tempting her into the carrier with a bit of her favourite food - I've had success with feral toms in this way. In fact with a carrier-shy cat, it's a good idea to leave the carrier about, space permitting, with a nice cosy blanket inside and some treats or whatever she enjoys. My most timid cat is now a doddle to get into her carrier...she sleeps there lol.

Hope all goes well with her, good luck and please keep updating :)

agree with Lilith; hopefully the vet / vet nurse will be able to advise on course of action by seeing the pictures. Best of luck.

That's a good idea. I will try to stop by the vet's and see if they can look at the pictures.

Thank you for your suggestions.
