why not corn?

Post by PeanutsFriend »

I been wondering, why people are so touchy about corn being in the food?
I offer my cats corn. Popcorn, corn on the cob. They like it!
You offer rice, gag.
You offer potatoes, you got to be kidding me!
You offer any of the mixing ingredients they put in food in its pure state, they don't like it.
So why is everybody wanting to take corn out of their food?
Yeah, they don't like wheat or oatmeal neither.
My Lucky will eat out of the large serving bowl for his popcorn. He likes searching out his kernels himself.

it's not that the cats don't like it, but many have a dietary intolerance to the cereals so shouldn't have it

Also quite often it's used as a cheap bulking agent in cat food; aiming to fill a cat up with something that isn't nutritionally of any value but cheap to manufacture

I love the look on that cat's face!

NOBODY gets my popcorn!

Yeah, cats will always want a taste of what people eat, even if it's not traditional cat nutrition; I suppose cats hunting and eating rodents in farming areas get a modicum of corn in their diet if they eat the guts of their prey but, as Meriad says, it's often used nowadays as a bulking agent.

While we're on the subject, why is fish a 'traditional' food for cats? All these cat accessories decorated with little fish, fishy shaped treats and so on? Many of them DO like fish but I suspect the cat/fish association's only because fish used to be the cheapest of cheap foods, which was all some cats got in the bad old days- if they were lucky.

I can't think it's because cats were famous for catching fish although I expect there were and are exceptions but in my experience though they'll watch an aquarium or pond for hours, I've never yet met a cat who tickled trout or was willing to get its armpits wet

Just questioning if the pet food people are drumming up a demand, when there isn't one. Cats know what they like.I feed what they wish to eat, good or bad. Life is too short. Purina makes me laugh with their corn, sugar and rice.

Loved that picture of Lucky! And the video of a cat fishing! Aversion to water is certainly not universal among cats. Maine Coons don't seem to mind water - certainly my Tilly (and Badger when he was around) doesn't mind getting wet (and Tilly adores fish). Indeed, going back into early cat history, the Egyptians are supposed to have had Fishing Cats

Luckily none of my cats seem to crave sugary drinks ........

Turkish Van cats are supposed to love water, there are lots of Youtube videos of them swimming.

I once bred and sold a Siamese kitten who developed a taste for white wine...

I advised his owners to tell him to be like his mamma and stick to Ribena...

No lie!
