Hi all its been a few years since I posted on here hope everyone is well.
I was on holiday last week basically Garfield I thought had cut his nail and maybe got it infected, well after a trip to the vets to day they reckon it may be a tumour so he's on a week of antibiotics to see if it clears if not a X-ray and potentially loss of a toe. Is this serious, should I be concerned about how much time I left with him I asked her if she meant cancer and she said yes and toes are the worst kind normally.
I am sorry to heat this as we have been throuh a different form of cancer with our cat. It is difficult waiting for things to happen so know how you feel. There is not a lot you can do atm other than get a second opinion but as you have only just seen a vet you need to let the antibiotics take time to work. You could take the cat to another vet but bear in mind that atm they may give you the same info and may stress the cat taking him in. I presume you have a good vet? I hope someone comes along soon with some advice on this condition but really only a vet can help on this as advice on here is not medical and reliable unlike the advice your vet can give you. good luck and keep us posted. When we found out a definate diagnosis we did get a second opinion too.
I suppose I need to prepare for the worst as it's just she's was saying an infection would make him unwell but be a quick healing process but a tumour won't make him unwell for a long time, and he certainly isn't unwell.
Just after back up really has anyone been through similar and it has turned out ok?
Cats can go downhill very quickly indeed with the simplest of illnesses but also pick up again very quickly so try not to worry atm. Give the AB time and bear in mind a second opinion is always a possibility.
I'm afraid you just have to sit this out and wait for the results. If it helps, though, I have known a cat have a toe removed due to a lump that turned out to be cancerous and the removal of the toe did solve the issue - the cancer was removed and didn't come back. So .... even if it is bad news that's not necessarily as bad as you fear. Hopefully, though, it's just an infection and the ABs will help sort it out. All paws here crossed for the results. xx
I wasn't sure about posting this, but your post reminded me of what happened in June/July. I had a similar thing with Kylie. She had a bad toe which didn't respond to ABs. They had her in to have a good look under sedation, they said they thought the toe should come off, as even if it was an infection and it healed, they thought it would cause her problems walking. It was sent for biopsy and was confirmed to be adenocarcinoma. I was warned that it could spread to her lungs, which it did and we lost her 3 weeks later. I really hope this isn't the case for Garfield. In Kylie's case, it was something I had never heard of and unique to cats, called lung-digit syndrome.
I know there is no point in saying don't worry, but there is also every possibility it is just an infection. Let's hope so.
PS - Just to add that Kylie was unwell - she had lost her spark, so there is every hope for Garfield

I am definitely keeping all options in my head open as I want to get my head around things if they do happen.
He's being more vocal and clingy atm but not off food so that's a good sign.
Out of interest if it was an infection how quickly would the redness go down. She sprayed with a anti bac spray and gave 2 weeks jab of a antibiotic on Wednesday last week.
I've been soaking it, and it doesn't seem so angry and red, it almost looks just dirty.

Well, I turned up on Friday and my normal vet was on holiday and so the vet looking at his toe said she has nothing to compare it to so cant give an opinion and I stupidly paid for the consultation too I am cross with them and cross with myself!
She said to wait till the antibiotics have been in his system the 2 weeks and bring him back so I booked him in for Weds which is 2 weeks, he also needs his annual jab so I will pay for that but not the consultation again.
She gave me some hibiscrub to wash with but these are new vets to me and I am already loosing faith in them.
Well, this was the same vet as last week so she did have something to compare it to, and good timing too as he came in last night with blood pouring out of his toe. We pinned him down and managed to cut some of the old nail away she reckons he really badly damaged it and I need to keep an eye on the quick? If that gets redder or weeps atall he needs to go back in but can take 6-8 weeks for the nail to grow back.
Thats good news but still sucks I gotta try and keep it clean and an eye on it but still pleased.
