different behaviour after coming back from VETS

Post by TAMMY3CATS123 »

Hello.
I really need help and I hope someone sees this soon.

We have 3 cats, two boys, and one girl. They are brother and sister brought up as kittens together, The boy had to be rushed to the Vet, turns out he was blocked with crystals at the tip of his penis, he had to stay two nights after being cared for to make sure he was okay. Brought him home and the two other cats are shunning him, they continue to hiss at him and they won't stay in the general area as he is.
Why are they acting like this???
The male that came home is still vomiting green liquid. He was also forced to change his food as well and is taking meds.
Please tell me this is going to end soon.

Hi there and welcome.

Yes, it will end soon. Cats are very dependent on smell, and your boy won't smell like himself after two nights at the vet's. Reactions can be different; some cats won't be bothered; others will, but it seems to be quite a common problem in multi-cat households if one cat needs hospitalisation or even goes away for less than a day for neutering.

The alien smell will wear off and things will go back to normal; in the meantime try giving your boy a rubdown with say a blanket the other cats have slept on, or brush him with their brushes - or even give him a going-over with a tee shirt or similar that you've worn all day, just to get him smelling more like 'home' lol.

Best wishes for his recovery; if you have any worries about vomiting/meds over the weekend it's a good idea to have a word with the on-duty vet or their staff; most vets are happy to advise.

Paws crossed things settle down soon; they should :)

All will be fine very soon. The scent of the vets can upset things. Cats don't like change. You said your cat had crystals in his urine. Our Sam had a bad blockage caused by crystals and can make a cat very unwell. Sam was at the vets for 3 days on a catheter etc. Diet change as recommended by your vet is very very important indeed so try and keep on top of this as crystals can make a cat very poorly, very quickly. Exercise outside is just as important. Our Sam was shut in whilst we were renting near a busy road and this was another cause of the problem, lack of exercise is bad. Good luck and all will be fine.

As has been said, the reaction of the others is because he smells of vets instead of his usual home smell, so rubbing him with bedding or something that smells of home will help - you could also try rubbing him and then them with the same cloth to 'equalise' things a bit, especially around the cheeks and head where the scent glands are.

I hope your boy recovers from his blockage, make sure he drinks plenty of liquids to keep his bladder flushed through. I add a little water to wet food, and also give cat milk as a treat to my boy after he suffered from similar problems.
