Tom Is Constipated

My 14 year old Tommy's appetite is good. Unfortunately He's constipated and (goes) approximately only once every 3 to 4 days.
When He does manage it His stools are small and appear hard. Do you folks think I should just let this continue, or perhaps buy something to try to remedy the situation? and if so, what meds would you advise?
Many Thanks.
Chris.

Hi Christopher, I too have a 14 year old, almost 15, who last year was just the same as your Tommy. I tried Katalax (which you can get via Amazon) and is a tube of palatable gunk; you just smear a small amount on the cat's lips, and had a fair amount of success, but what really helped in Mouse's case was reading on here about the Royal Canin Fibre Response. It's a dry food. I left a bowl down for her; she liked it and just helped herself. It softened and bulked up her motions and she became much more regular. These days she doesn't seem to need it at all; she's not always regular, sometimes misses a day, sometimes still produces harder stools, but on the whole her motions are large and normal. If she reverted to how she was, I'd put her back on the FR. Its only downside is its price, but it did work wonders for her - and still cheaper than the vet :)

Hope this helps and good luck to Tommy :)

When did he last have blood tests? Certain health conditions can cause dry, hard stools, so I'd get him checked over by the vet first.

Agree with Booktigger - given Tommy's age I'd make sure he gets a clean bill of health from the vet first.

Also agree with Lilith - the Fibre Response food has had so much excellent feedback; definitely something to consider for your boy if it does turn out to be dietary only

Good luck

A lot of vets stock Royal Canin - but I've heard that Amazon is cheaper - even there the prices/suppliers seem to vary from time to time. Someone else may know of another supplier who's better value.

Glad to hear Tommy's got a clean bill of health. My Mouse had a vet check too during her constipated period but again nothing untoward - relief!

Hope the Royal Canin helps Tommy :)
