Recovery from Status Epilepticus + treatment

Post by Asyousaid »

Hi there,

It's my first visit here as a user, although I've viewed a few topics in the past :-)

My girlfriend and I adopted a cat about 3 months ago, he's a lovely black and white moggie called Leon. He's just over a year old. Unfortunately, soon after we adopted him we found that he was epileptic, with going outside/in the carrier the apparent triggers of epilepsy.

On the vet's advice, we started him on Keppra and tried him going outside again, but he wasn't having it, so we decided he would probably remain an indoor cat for the time being, at least. However, as we didn't think we would be hitting the relevant 'triggers' for a seizure, we weaned him off the Keppra (gradually, with advice from the vet).

My girlfriend is abroad visiting family over the holidays, and on Tuesday night Leon and I were chilling out out on the sofa when he went into what turned out to be status epilepticus - he had several fits in quick succession and of course, as soon as I realised it was more than one small fit, I called the out of hours service and rushed him to the PDSA. They were fantastic, kept him in for (what was left of!) the night and used valium and diazepam to calm him down, as well as reducing his temperature (he had hit 105 degrees). In the morning, as suggested I took him to the vet but while we were waiting, he started fitting again and was anaesthetised - the vet kept him in for the day and I picked him up around 18:15 yesterday.

He certainly has an appetite but his co-ordination still seems a little off (he's not quite able to make all the jumps he is used to) and he is meowing a lot - sometimes sounding grumpy but sometimes a small, sad meow that I've not heard often. He's been home for 18 hours now and as agreed, I called the vet this morning to let him know where things were at. He didn't seem concerned by this recovery time, and indicated that after all Leon has been through, it might be a couple of days before he is back to normal. I'm just really looking for some advice on how best to care for him during this time - of course I've booked the day off work and am not in now until after the holidays, but I don't want to overfeed him and I'm finding it difficult to encourage him to sleep for long periods. He also doesn't seem to respond much to affection, which is v unusual for him (he's such a friendly lapcat normally) but I guess is normal. It's also fair to say that with the meowing as insistent as it is, I can only sleep when he is quiet, so it's been a night and morning of catnaps...

Sorry for the long post! It's sod's law that this would happen while I'm in sole custody!

Thanks in advance :-)

Sorry - as a PS - I'm also a bit worried about how long it's been since he's defecated. Normally he's pretty strictly once-a-day but there hasn't been anything since he returned from the vets.

Thanks!

Hi David,

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about Leon.

I don't know anything about epilepsy in cats but it must be a scary experience. Regarding not using his litter tray however, this is possibly likely to be caused by the upheaval of the vets and also by the medication, anaesthetic etc that he has been given after the last day or so.

I hope Leon recovers soon.

Best Wishes

Vic
