Why does my cat meow for no reason?

Hello!
I need some help with my cat. I'm wondering if anyone had the same problem or know any explanation for the situation.
I have two cats, a 5 year old lady and a 7 months old boy adoptee. One night two weeks ago my younger cat introduced a completely new behaviour, he sat on top of the wardrobe and meowed for hours. I was really worried, I tought he was in pain or something, but he seemed fine, he was willing to play etc. Also he had water, clean litter, food, place to sleep.
Ever since, this goes on every night, as soon as I turn the lights down and try to sleep he starts to meow on this very annoying tone. I'm not getting any sleep, and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is.
Tought he might be bored, so we played more and played right before sleeping, but nothing changed.
Tried to ignore him, he went on.
Tried to comfort him, nothing.
We visited my grandparents for Christmas and he did nothing like that meowing there, today we arrived home and it started again!
I have no idea what is going on, the cats like each other, they have opportunity to climb up to high places, they have plenty of beds to sleep in, a big living area, lots of toys. Also the sound is very different from his usual meows.
Thank you in advance for your opinions!
