Good quality cat food recommendations please

Post by TheCatsMum »

Can anyone recommend any good quality cat foods please.

My CKD is now flatly refusing the renal foods I've tried, doesn't want his old Classic cat food and now he's getting fussy about Felix AGAIl. The vet recommended I put him on a good quality cat food, I guess she's thinking about something that's easy to digest without too much rubbish added!

Gourmet pate is popular with my two, and there are senior options - I get it from Zooplus mainly but they do sell it in Tescos

What renal foods have you tried? I find the dry is more palatable than the wet.

Kay, thank you, will look into the Gourmet pate. He generally prefers jelly and gravy, but anything worth trying.

booktigger, I've tried RC (all flavours) and Proplan, both wet. He used to eat dry, but has slowly gone off this over the last year (vet has checked his teeth and mouth more than once). The only dry I've tried is RC renal and he completely refused.

Pretty much anything you buy in the supermarkets is full of rubbish, so your best bet if you want to get them something really good is to visit a specialist pet shop like Pets Corner. One of the best cat foods you can give your cat is Canagan, because it contains 60% real meat, as opposed to the 4% meat derivatives every supermarket brand from Whiskas ro Felix to yes, sorry, the Gourmet cat foods contain. Cats are carnivores so they are meant to have a very high meat content and none of the cereals and other rubbish that gets put into cheap foods to bulk it out. Those foods are also horrifyingly high in sugars, which is why cats love it so much. It's like being fed pizza or KFC all day - you're not likely to refuse it! Canagan is grain free, has excellent natural joint care and, unlike most supermarket brands, is manufactured inside the UK, so it's more environmentally friendly as well.

Other excellent options are Applaws and Cheshire Cat (for wet food) or More for biscuits. If you wanted to look at the absolute best option for cats, raw food is best. Cats aren't meant to have chunks of processed meat and gravy or jelly - they're meant to be eating dead animals, raw, bones and all. This is basically what they get from the raw food. Again, it's only available in specialist pet shops.

Sorry, I'm sure people get fed up with my harping on about the importance of good quality cat food, but it's something I do get rather passionate about.

Thanks for your replies. I'm managing to get a bit of ProPlan renal down him again and have a chicken thigh defrosting for later (as I know he'll eat some of that, but will spend sometime later on checking out your suggestions with a view to doing a online order - it's all pretty confusing that's do chose for the best!
