Hi
Has anyone else's cat eaten cat litter from their litter tray? My cat vomited and I noticed it contained the small stone like litter. She is a regular BSH around 14yrs old (I got her from a rescue centre so age approx!). I have had her for a few years and have never noticed this before so hoping it is a one off. Obviously I am keeping an eye on her to check this doesnt carry on but just wondered if any one had experienced it and what causes it.
Thanks
S

Re: Cat eating cat litter...
Some cats do eat the litter but it's not quite normal. When was she last at a vet for a regular check up. And what type of litter is it; if it's clay then it could be that she's missing some mineral and trying to get it from the litter.
What is she like otherwise re eating and toileting? Have you changed her food?

Re: Cat eating cat litter...
Generally eating cat litter and licking walls is a sign of anemia so at her age a swift vet visit may be in order. Hope she's ok.

Yes it definitely needs checking by the vet as it can be a sign she's trying to replace something she's deficient in.

Thank you all for your replies, it is a lightweight clay cat litter so from your answers would seem like she has a deficiency. Trip to vets booked! x

I would take the litter away and use something that's non-clumping and non-clay until you can get her to the vet.
Re: Cat eating cat litter...
Sorry its taken so long to reply to this. So I took Molly to the vets and she had bloods and urine checked. They came back normal - her kidney and liver tests were fine so they dont know what is causing it. They mentioned PICA but thats something that is related to kittens rather than an adult cat. I have been keeping an eye on her and making sure she is happy in the home and litter changed so fingers crossed it was just a phase!
