Is it normal for my neutered male cat to try and mate with my un-spayed female cat in heat?

How long ago was he neutered? It is possible for sperm to remain viable for some time...
All sorts of behaviour can be triggered by the pheromones given off during heat - my two female dogs play all sorts of flirting and mounting games when one of them is in season, and a male, especially if he reached maturity before being neutered, is even more likely to be affected.
