conjunctivitis after vaccination?

I've just brought home a little rescue puss, who has conjunctivitis. The rescue said this appeared after his first vaccination a few weeks ago, and treatment with eye drops cured it within 3 or 4 days. He went for his second jab on Thursday, and it has come back, so he's back on the drops. I picked him up today. I don't have a problem with administering the drops etc, so I'm not too worried about this, but haven't come across it in association with vaccinations before. Has anyone else come across this? Apparently the vet wasn't too concerned and didn't feel the need to give him an antibiotic jab.

Erm, I think we need some details on the new addition!! :D The only thing I'd be concerned about is that he must have a low immune system for him to get conjunctivitis after both injections - what is his background?

that's a new one on me too

any chance he had an allergic reaction to something at the surgery? the symptoms are not dissimilar to those of conjunctivitis

Sorry, he’s 11 months old, recently neutered and vaccinated. Handed in to rescue about 3months ago by owner who for some reason changed her mind about wanting to own two young un-neutered unvaccinated male cats. Rescue have sorted all that, he’s tested fiv neg, he’s very sweet natured. Just has a very gummy eye. He’s had a tough day today (long drive from the rescue) so he’s happy to sleep things off today. Eating and drinking well.

The thought about poor immune system occurred to me too

I’d post a pic but I’ve never worked out how! We haven’t named him yet either

If his immune system is compromised perhaps he is reacting to the adjuvant in the vaccine?

Looking forward to hearing more about the new addition. :D

Surprised the rescue waited so long to do his vacc, and also that such a young cat would wait 3 months, what colour is he? Might be worth getting some Flumax from the vet to boost his immune system

I can't remember exactly when they got him, may have been less than that. They may have decided to neuter first, then wait till he'd recovered from that before vaccinating him. He pulled his stitches out and had to go back in to have that sorted, so that may also have held things up. He's a typical tuxedo cat, but very small. He really is a poppet.

I chose the most cat-friendly cat I could find to be a companion for Elsie, who also likes cats, and she flippin went for him last night! So he hides and growls at her when he sees her now  It's a bit sad really. There's no pleasing some people. I thought this one would be a breeze but now I'm having to do the intros by the book instead. :-(

Here he is. He looks like a kitten, but he must be not far off fully grown. And sooooo sweet natured. Elsie is a silly mare sometimes.

Aww! He's just like my Mouse at that age, and she was just the same, very small for her age - and then she suddenly shot up and became the biggest cat in the house.

Congrats and fusses to him and naughty Elsie :D

Thanks Lilith. It would even out the odds if he did put on a growth spurt! She's just being a terrible wuss, and now she's frightened him as well - he's such a friendly laid back cat, he's not used to cats being mean to him. This will take a while to sort out.... :-(

Wow, he's tiny for his age! Sorry Elsie decided to make things awkward for you

The pic makes him look smaller than he really is, but he’s very petite. Elsie’s reaction is such a shame, he’s such a friendly little cat, she has no need to be scared of him, but he’s terrified of her now.
