PROFENDER CAUSED FITTING/SEIZURES

It's very difficult to use a spot on product that doesn't drip down the neck when the cat jerks its head after administration. However careful one is to get it on the right spot behind the neck.

I have a camera on my cats overnight. Imagine my horror when one of them (15 years old) started fitting badly :( She'd been given Profender during the day and I know she ingested some of it. She fitted for 2 nights and then it stopped.

I have the video clips which I showed to the vet who accepted this was most likely to be a reaction to Profender. This was very possibly an allergic reaction to Praziquantel, the active ingredient in Profender.

Bayer doesn't mention in the contraindication section of the leaflet that it can cause seizures if ingested. My cat's reaction to Profender has been reported to Bayer. Bayer tell me that the toxins will leave the body in 48 hours which correlates with the timing of fits starting/stopping.

Another product called Stronghold does mention 'reversible seizures can be caused'. However, I did use Stronghold in spite of what it says on the leaflet!

It's often only when a negative reaction happens that we see the risks involved when using insecticides. It did happen to my cat, however rare it may be.

Please note that I have edited this post since posting it yesterday.

Our cat had problems with Profender too ... he didn't ingest any of it (thank goodness) but I noticed after using it, he developed some hair loss along with redness of his skin where it had been applied. I stopped using it and contacted Bayer by email to tell them what had happened - I did get a reply with some kind of apology but, of course, these incidents were rare. Some cats may accept Profender without any problems of course otherwise I assume it would be withdrawn ... then again, maybe not

The vet recommended Milbemax but unfortunately this means we have to take him to the vet to get it down him as Blackie is very un-operative when it comes to shoving pills down his throat. Even the vet is very wary of him ... nothing like fear aggression to make a cat fight as if its life depended on it

Hi Jan,

Thanks for sharing your experience with Profender. I don't want to sound like an 'alarm monger' but I need to let other cat owners know the risks involved using this product.

It may be that my cat Beauty is one in 10,000 cats with this rare side effect. I found this review site on Profender when I first looked into to it:

https://www.productreview.com.au/p/profender.html

I'm now researching other worming options but it's difficult with cats like Beauty and your Blackie who don't oblige when it comes to tablets!

I have found a product called Verm- X which you can find by doing a Google. Good luck!!
