New kitten today

Ok, its been quite a few years since I posted here as we've been all settled etc!

Anyway after a very sad few months with loss of my grandma and various animals, we are today adopting a 6 month old kitten, she is good with cats and kids which we have both of.

I just wanted to see how people introduce new cats into a multi cat house hold. Our 3 I know will eventually accept our new little girl (who is nameless at the minute) but just wanted some peoples views on how to introduce her? In the past we tend to let the newbie into the downstairs utility room and keep her in there, then we let her toddle around the house in the daytime but for the next week or 2 keep her in 'her' room at night so our 3 cats don't feel put out and she doesn't worry about the others.

Does this sound sensible to everyone? The last thing I want to do is my current 3 cats who are just like our extra children to feel put out by a new arrival.

Cheers

Congratulation on the new addition, hopefully photos will follow soon.

My instinct would be to take it a little slower. Keep her confined to the utility room for 2 or 3 days so the others can get used to the sound and scent of someone else in the home, then let her wander around during the day, but only when you can escort her to see how the others react to her. Only after she has met the others while you have been with her and there hasn't been any sign of aggression would I let her wander around by herself.

However every cat and household is different the main thing is to watch everyone's reactions to each other then judge day by day as to how much you can leave them alone.

I agree with Ruth, take it a bit slower to start with, being introduced to a new home, new humans and three new cats all in one go may be a bit overwhelming for your newbie, never mind the existing crew. Every cat is different - our Elsie had a complete wobbler when we brought Toby home, but she had always been a complete tart with previous newbies. Toby is the most cat-friendly young lad ever, so I had no idea that she would react like this and it was a nightmare sorting them out. All friends now, but just an illustration that you can't always assume it will be a breeze!

Good luck.

We aren’t doing badly she’s very happy in her room. She’s met 2 of ours but my princess Pebbles hasn’t actually been to meet her. But so far Jess is doing well and she loves the kids she feels they are there purely for her to command fusses and attention off!!

Hi Andy congrats on your new addition. I too have a Pebbles. An exotic Oriental x. She was adopted but they had a 13 yr old who didn’t cope. I think they would’ve worked things out but they panicked so she’s back with me & my four. Looking forward to pics of Jess I assume is the new little un. Vivian & the Famous Five from Oz.
