Recurring diarrhoea with borderline renal failure

Another cat, another question!

My 14 year old Ragdoll boy has been in very mild borderline CRF for 2 years now and is basically well, except that having a delicate tummy as well he is prone to bouts of the Dire Rear. These are coming more often and lasting longer now. I have been taking him to the vets every time it goes 2-3 days for a vitamin B injection as that seems to be the most effective treatment for him, and get him to drink by offering a little water with tuna which perks him up in the meantime. I will also get some Cobalaplex on vet advice to add to his food. This latest attack (over a weekend of course) is a bad one.

Question is, does anyone have a better remedy than this to hopefully break this pattern and prevent the tummy upsets? Or any experience dealing with a CRF cat whose main issue is this? My only other CRF cat years ago had 8 healthy happy years, I can see this isn't going to be the case this time around. We have just about bankrupted ourselves getting the other cat through radioactive iodine treatment so avoiding avoidable vet visits would be a real help as we're really struggling now. Any advice at all welcome.

Oh poor chap ... and yes indeed, always at the weekend, just as they always select the newest rug to barf up on ... I found a huge Mousey LOG, or was that a TRUNCHEON? late last night ... :x

Now this may be a complete no-no, especially with your guy's CRF, but my old tomcat used to get bouts of diarrohea from time to time ... and I'd give him a little bottle of vanilla Actimel. I wasn't so clued up about additives then, but the probiotic seemed to firm him up straight away and he loved it; thought it was melted icecream. Eventually the problem cleared up completely apart from occasional sludgy motions (happens to us all, after all.)

So I wonder if a probiotic remedy, perhaps one more suitable to cats, might be worth trying ...

Thank you Lilith that would never have occurred to me ... unfortunately he won't touch anything vaguely dairy-related though.

We are booked in to the vets at 3.15 as I've come home to a mess and him yowling in the tray. But they don't seem to have any answers, I will press harder for something more permanent.

I have been forced to change his food - after this bout began though - as he has stopped eating his renal dry (down to less than 10g some days) and the wet renal was making him sick from a few months ago. So he is now on Felix pouches, less than ideal but we just have to respond to the most pressing problem each time. At least he is eating.

What with Madam and her food, I am back to square one where I was 5 years ago!!!

Would you believe they had no injectable vitamin B at the vets - that was the whole reason I went there!!!

We have some Pro-Kolin which seems to have done something already, and a vitamin B oral supplement. We also have a home urine sample collection kit as apparently we want to check for any protein loss that way. There is some stuff he can have (for life) to fix it if he is losing it.
