Vibes for Buster please

Post by booktigger »

He's going for his three month check up tomorrow, he looks like he has lost more weight (he lost 100g last month, which I expected without Molly's leftovers to eat), but his fur is looking a bit coarse, and he is limping more (but then races round like a lunatic!!). He was very active during the day on Sun, but then paid for it by being that tired I had to prod him for 5 mins to check him.

Thanks. Hazel, it is prob best to say what isn't wrong with him!! He had to have a kidney removed 2.5 years ago, so is on 3 monthly blood tests, he is also prone to urinary infections, initially was diagnosed with an enlarged left ventricle, but that seems to have disappeared and left with a regular arrhythmia (apparently not that bad), he has two deformed legs, at least one of which is arthritic, he has IBD, and last December one of his liver enzymes was down to 2!! And he's a probable calici carrier. Think that's all his health issues. His main problem is he doesn't show symptoms - he had a dead kidney, which is excruciatingly painful with no symptoms, nor when his liver enzymes were practically nil.

Everything seems well, he has maintained his weight, heart is fine and just waiting for bloods. Vet thinks the reason he is eating less is because he no longer has competition. He does have a UTI which could explain his behaviour on Sun, but he has been out with the neighbours cat since, she thinks he is worse when I'm round cos he is possessive of me. We did discuss some options for his arthritis, although 95' of the time it doesn't bother him.

Bloods are back. Not great news, urea is down, but creatnine is up, only just in normal limits. Both liver values down despite being on meds. Plan is to get another urine sample and send it to the lab to check for protein and sediment. Then we are going to scan his liver, kidney and bladder to see if it shows anything.

I'm sorry the results weren't better, all paws crossed that the scan results enable you to help him.

Does he seem any brighter?

Forgot to update this, its been chaos since. He obliged with a urine sample on Wed, and is booked in for a scan on Mon, we'll see what that brings. He's spending the day there, so can be scanned when relaxed rather than rushing it in an appointment. His front paw was looking funny yesterday, so I'm going to ask them to look at it too.

Well, his scan was normal, vet was happy with colour and size of all his organs, so the conclusion is that his organs are deteriorating, but it is early stages, and to keep with the monitoring - I'm more worried about his liver to be honest. His urine sample showed his protein levels were fine, so no need to go on the meds.

Noticed that Buster was looking thinner, so hot the scales out and he has lost 200g in two weeks, despite his appetite being better. Hopefully it is just delayed loss of not having Molly's leftovers, I'll weigh him again in a fortnight, if hes not gained, I'll have to take him back, maybe get his thyroid checked, unless vet has any otger suggestions

Good luck Desley. it might be partly the weather getting to him. I was at the vets today with Laz (will update his thread) and one of the things the vet said is to keep him cool and well hydrated. He said a high core temperature can affect the kidneys. Mine have been eating much less over the last few weeks.
