Tooth Reabsorption, Potential Oral Cancer - Thoughts?

Post by Reba » Fri May 24, 2019 7:51 pm

Greetings from Ottawa, Canada

Would appreciate your analysis.

My two vets and feline dental specialist do not really know what is wrong with my beloved cat Reba. They all say Reba does not profile normal on anything.

What is currently on the table is:

• Spinning
• Confirmed tooth reabsorption
• Jaw grinding, mouth jawing
• Wondering about feline stomatitis
• Potential oral cancer

My dearest fur child Reba is a 9 year old medium long hair pastel calico. Was found lost in the woods when 8 weeks old. I have been her human mother all her life. Reba has wanted for nothing.

Reba has a “deformed vault” in her head, confirmed by MRI. She has done epileptic spins (head bent to left side of body, biting side, spinning to the left in a rapid spin). Most of the time she comes out of it well. Sometimes a day or two to return to normal.

Two months ago she had the worst spins of her life over total of 4 days. That settled together with aid of sedation. Two weeks Reba was back to normal.

Then she suddenly started to “jaw” – her head bent to right side, “sawing” jaw up and down on right side, shaking head from side to side, some pawing to face. This was new to Reba.

Vet confirmed the last tooth on the lower right jaw line was tooth reabsorption, clear on x-ray. Just behind the tooth against the jaw was an inflamed, ulcer like, area. The tooth was extracted cleanly with no residue. A piece of the inflamed area was also removed and placed in solution for future analysis. Vet confirmed no evidence of oral cancer on visual inspection and x-ray. All Reba’s teeth were cleaned and x-ray indicated no further tooth reabsorption.

Unfortunately Reba kept “jawing” despite two pain killers and even after stitches dissolved. Back to vet who confirmed that the corresponding upper tooth was puncturing the previous extraction area. Off to feline dental specialist in Montreal, who extracted two upper teeth. She also removed the ulcer like area and confirmed no visual evidence of oral cancer.

Unfortunately, even with morphine shots, Reba’s “jawing” kept getting worse. Reba’s food is pureed even then after she eats a bit, she starts to “jaw”. When she yawns, she “jaws”.

To vet yesterday who said where the previous ulcer site is, it is a bit red and swollen. This is the right side where the majority of the “jawing” is most pronounced. The vet was out of explanations other than oral cancer. Sent the previous specimen for biopsy. Reba does not present with any of the typical symptoms of oral cancer.

Three vets have examined tissue from this area and none of them have expressed alarm. Oral cancer is usually fast spreading, nothing much has changed in Reba’s jaw.

As the fur mother, I am upset. So I did more research and learned that feline stomatitis is linked to tooth reabsorption; both conditions are very painful. The stomatitis is an autoimmune situation involving inflammation. Sent this idea to vet who called this morning and agreed to pursue this angle as she has some, but not all, symptoms of this conditions. This afternoon, Reba started her anti-inflammatory. Thankfully, my vets are very open minded and curious and will pursue all ideas.

The spin to today = 2 months. It is really hard on Reba and her fur parents.

I believe that “many hands/brains make light work” – so may I ask you to share your analysis as to what is happening to by most beloved Reba Deba Do?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

PS, I caught a stray cat in my backyard in Toronto using a raccoon cage. I named him Courageous Man. He had one ear flap folded down due to frost bite. He was the dearest gentleman, he died at 6 years due to kidney failure, we found out he had only one kidney. What you do to help stray cats is outstanding, I support many organizations in Ottawa where I live.

Thank you kindly.

Poor girl, it sounds like things are easy for her or for you.

I can't really give any advice I don't have any experience of reabsortion or stomatitis, however my one thought is have any investigations gone beyond the mouth area. Could the problem be further back in the jaw joint or even up towards the ear, something linked more to her spinning (which i am assuming are almost a type of seizure) rather than her teeth. If she suddenly got worse after a bad spinning session it does make me wonder if it is more linked to that.

Hopefully someone else will be on with alternative ideas.

Give Reba a good fuss from me.

Oh thank you so much from Reba's human momma.

I do agree, there is something linked between the big spinning session and the onset of the "jawing" - although Reba did have the tooth reabsorption.

It is difficult because it is hard for Reba to eat - she inevitably starts "jawing" after she eats food - so from Reba's perspective food = pain.

Gosh I wish our dear fur children could talk and understand us.

Something I would fix if I had enough power.

Thanks so much to everyone.

We have Stomata experience AND RESOLVE!! //A HEALTHY CAT NOW WITHOUT ANY MEDS MAINTAINANCE!!! So healthy she actually runs and plays at nighttime alone with toys and chases her male roomates !! LOL!! BUT!! HERES HOW AND WHY!! EXTRACTED ALLLL OF HER TOOTH ROOTS NOT JUST TEETH !!! IT has been a full year without all teeth/roots !! NO Re-0ccuring sore gums either !!??!! There was one key factor/ BLUE LIGHT LASER GUM THERAPY!!/ ALLLL THE ROOTS tiny parts have MUST BE REMOVED FROM GUMS / EXAYS BEFORE AND AFTER ANY EXTRACTIONS ARE DEMANDED SO THAT INFECTION HAS NO WHERE TO BEGIN AGAIN!! THEN AT SAME TIMING AS SURGERY w stitching of gum tissue back up/ it is very similar to any oral work humans require so no its not soo terribly dramatically Tramatic .. in fact the PAIN is GONE ENOUGH THAT eating and drinking is finally easier within HOURS !!! HOW MUCH!!???// AND WHERES AND HOWS ON THE LASER THERAPY!! /// Well, YOU MUST PHONE CALL ALL OVER TO FIND A VET With the laser GUM THERAPY... most just Can't seem to find time for it and yes SOME Times its not an easy FAST fix and people Don't think its working and scamming BUT IT DOES TAKE TIME / ITS A HEALING BY REMOVING INFECTION WHICH ALWAYS TAKES TIMING and YES if food definitely will embed in gums no matter what it will need a few more therapy times visits at timings of the gums needs NOT humans.. so yes back you go as soon as head turning licking or avoidance of food drink etc drool growling during eating etc.... HOW does it go like this light> IT IS JUST A very certain type of laser light/ cool and no burning with good trained Dr or their specifically trained assistants // GO TO PEOPLE YOU LIKE HOW COMFORTABLE PET / CAT IS /BE AWARE THAT YOU CAN BE PRESENT TOO and you'll see that they THEY MUST handle your pet Not You so positioning is accurate just Help Them Help You ; Cat!! The doctors that rely on meds ARE NOT Trying this as should !! GO TO ONE THAT DOES THIS/ IT IS NOT AT ALL EXPENSIVE !/ $50 per and even packages of several so your covered for the half dozen times may need... we haven't used but I think just 3 and they after the ones during the extraction surgeries … EXTRACTION SURGERY just like you / CANT BE ALL AT ONCE you need to eat !!LL! / so tops or quadrants and ours in pets case the fangs were and are LAST THIS IS Bc FANGS ARE THE STRONGEST THICKEST AND MOST pertinent to cardio w immune system too as w humans … sorry for typos.. and long here, … but the whole PRICE???$ IS DOABLE and DOES TRULY ADD MMMMANNNNY MORE YEARS!!/ my doctors own cat is 18yp with one fang bc of his extractions from this absorption !!! My longhair particularly genetically prevelant as goes its theorized had hers start at possibly 6-7-8yrs /like mid age beginning so this is a biological aging sort of symptomatic thing as well genetic is why goes long and some ways complicated to spot and treat as its not so clearly and well all teeth gone seems very extravagant and tramatic … cost would have been ONLY around 1300$ US dollars in my region and my Vet is a modest clinic BUT QUALLITY IS IN HUMBLE ENOUGH RENTED SPACES / ITS NOT THE OFFICE AS LONG AS QUALITY AND VERY CLEAN !! AND PEOPLE THERE TRULY ATTENTIVE TO ITS NECESSITIES!! / The first office was a true animal Hospital / NO WAY WOULD GO BACK!!/walk-in or not !!! DID NOT TAKE ROOTS/ BROKE OFF THE TEETH!!!!!!!!!! AND PERSUED TO MEDICATE OUR CAT TIL HER ORGANS WOULD BE TOXICALLY KILLING HER/ THIS IS SOOO COMMONPLACE ITS DREADFUL!!!/IT COST $1600!!! for SOME like ONLY HALF of them gone while others inflamed again in just under 6months with no warning from Licensed Veteranary Doctor/S !!!!!!! Yes, I know , w half still there how could we blame themmmmm / THE ROOTS WERE ALL STILL INTACT on the BROKEN OFF ONES/ Just bc they are Brittle from disease DOESNT MEAN its easy peasy gone from view GOOD!!!/ The Doctor even said "IT WAS SOO EASY THEY JUST Fell right Out !??/off ! ?? WARNING!!! THAT IS NOT AN EXPERIENCED DOCTOR/ TRAINED IN TOOTH ISSUES NO WAY >>> No way are the followup clinics Xrays faked either PROVING THIS HORRENDOUS shameful practice! Also the tech/assistants were bad at watching or being dutiful of the animals themselves and when closing down the hospital at hours days end.. some are sweet and others are just Not .. when I talked on phone w Doctors of that hospital all they would do is offer painkiller after a routine of steriods up to the amount possible toxic /offered NO HOPES AT ALL!! / I asked again for extra Xrays just BE SURE GOT ALL THE ROOTS/ AND THEY JUST GAVE ME STORIES ?!!>>>??? Wouldn't ??? GUILT yup ! So I began calling allover where could stand how far to drive my poor little cat in pain/ emergency clinics in cities you bet too!! AND I DUG THROUGH FORUMS LIKE THIS and .. LEARNED BETTER/ about this blue light laser therapy and IT DOES KILL that just right kind of bacteria in the feline gums and dogs too !! SO EVEN BETTER this modest clinic USED THE BLUE LIGHT on our very inflamed mouth cat BEFORE THEY DID ANY SURGERY SCHEDULING to see if she Was helped within the hour HOUR MIND YOU cat drank water after NOTHING ALL WEEKEND!!!!! I WAS SOO DESPERATE!! AND THEN THIS HELP SOOO BELIEVED MIRACLE / ITS JUST A NICE CALMING bacteria help no other rinse nor a shot didi they give her !!!! NOT LYING!! /So they did xrays and by time she felt bit better right in front of them and they judged the surgery amount and how to deal with what hadn't been correct by prior hospital / we had the surgery in just a couple days later/ she was home able to eat til then bc of the laser and ALL WAS AFFORDABLE Total under the loused up half job / THEY FELT SYMPATHY FOR OUR BROKEN OFF TEETH EVEN THO THEY HAD MUCH MORE WORK THAN THAT RUP OFF HOSPITAL!!! sorry but its True!! Im in the southeast USA .. my cats are not outdoors but on a porch if that … they were rescues and NONE have front claws since apparently their babyhood spay/neuters .. they are not sensitive and likely Very much de-clawing has helped them not reject or been rejected emotionally from their world.. afterall being outdoors to bathroom in soil is how contract organisms … I had a childhood beloved cat get ringworm I had to put bleach on myself as a teen bc family Vet and parents enforced it as a cure !??!! AWFUL!! NEVER/ there's foodgrade hydrogen peroxide if have to try that direction at all ! She was euthanized of course and had soo many dreaded open wounds by that timing !! SO GO TO GOOOD EDUCATED VETS it doesn't matter if they are old or young or male or female JUST BEING GOOD DOCTORS THAT LEARN AND WANT TO LEARN TO HELP ANIMAL PATIENTS JUST LIKE HUMANS NEED!// AFTERALL THEY CHARGE THE COST OF HUMAN TREATMENTS ANYMORE!! / Because we ended up paying an utterly absurd over $3 THOUSAND DOLLARS for our cat/ ITS ONLY RIGHT I WARN YOU AND HELP YOU/ AND TELL YOU HOW SHE IS TRULY A NEW ANOTHER LIKE CAT/ And thus her name Deja Vu on here is TRUTHFUL!! and IT IS WORTH the terrible time to save YOU ALL to know WE REALLY SAVED HER!!! and they do it PLENTY with this roots and gums cleanup treatment system. SO GO DEMAND XRAYS USED AFTER AND BEFORE TO BE SURE/ NO SKIMPING THEY ALWAYS INCLUDE XRAYS WITH SURGERIES WHAT KIND OF WORK DARE A LICENSED DOCTOR CUT BEFORE LOOK OR AFTER EITHER/ And Xrays are maybe ?$70!! SO WHY CANT THEY/ IF THEY ARE GOOD AT SKILLED AT that Tiny Tissue !!! ??/ DEFAINATELY THERE ARE DOCTORS THAT ARE AND ARENT AN ARM AND LEG AND A CAR!!!!/ we are driving 15yo cars too !!btw!! BUT WE ARE LOVED WITH PURRING SONGS AS WE GO TO SLEEP / SHE LULLABYES ME NOW BY MY HEAD EVERY NIGHT!!! THINK OF THAT!! IS YOUR PET THAT HEALTHY AND GRATEFUL TO BE WITH YOU AND YOURS TO ENJOY YOUUU TOO!!!! >>>????? SO LOVE THEM , DONT HAVE TO LET THEM SUFFER/ THE WHOLE THING IS UNDER $2K ANYWHERE EVERYWHERE NO MESSING / IT SHOULD NOT MEAN WORSE NOR EVEN THAT MUCH / TELL THEM SO! THEY DONT DESERVE MORE MONEY JUST FOR SPEAKING TO YOU A CERTAIN WAY!! YOUR CAT SHOULD BE ALLL THEY CARE ABOUT!!

let me add, that yes , food being soft is not a bad sticking in gums thing as they can lick it out and have enough softness to hold it to gums and palette , but what in the food is the meaningful piece: found FINALLY after the issues of softened bad bathroom issues with fruit veggy stuff out there and the actual rashes and hairloss to boot from all the gummy additives.. we are glad with a simple liver and chicken recipe with decent nutrition valueable vitamins and minerals alone, no probiotics either and for sure this food itsn't expensive bc theres no way it should or could be / time people get past the pestering of finances if they want continued encouraged economies just let people be sanely productive /ie happy! … liver and chicken and gums and cats fur and etc BETTER THAN EVER!! Never have used pest treatments and we do not use any litters of any consequences.. most just don't clump and those are the ones that make hideous issues the most from pests to mess to even a speck left hidden STINK dear god BAD PET PRODUCTS!!/ And treatments !! Skip Vets a long enough while to state its not worth it to go with everything they push... Do try this laser blue wave light for gum tissue inflammation healing / it handled by EXPERIENCED TRAINED PROFESSIONALS IN CLINICAL SETTINGS WILL BE A BREAK FROM THE PAIN at least and best that ~~ // Seizures? oh my.. lets be sure of the ears/ not having the gums inflamed can directly calm the sinus and throat/ears as this is all the same regions of inflammation.. she could have it back in her throat just one ulcer … every Vet that takes their fine time when cat is reacting is not worth time with probably.. of course corresponding teeth hit gums but its not like she could regrow teeth/once gone is gone no balance for hitting on food.. how would you feel, right you do understand / why would Doctors NOT?? Never understand the issue with doctors vagueness. well, some aren't quite so lol. nor their nurses etc. That's why there are and is Help .. when you do solve this, DO COME BACK AND POST!! At least if got the oral issue/ it could help the ears / throat all considered .. can def eat and live HAPPILY NORMAL AS EVER AND BETTER if do end up all extracted teeth JUST SO YOU KNOW its likely she could feel good enough and maybe the spin sympts will be more clear to you or even lessened that she may sort her own way.. then .. it gets clearer and someone will work that too.. get on phone / RESEARCH online and stop PAYING for guesses ! SO YOU CAN AFFORD THE REAL DEAL! as probably it won't be that bad as this game with guessers .. they shouldn't even be charging any full office visis as its an ongoing followup after dental . My cat did think we were taking her to put her down on the last other half of her teeth/ I know so .. as she stared me down in soul and dug her face into my arms and shivering.. they can't take alll this and being left even overnight but when they feel the relief OH THEY ARE IN WITH YOU and REALLY GLAD AND LOVE and LET and HELP the Doctors or Assistants they learn to Love them THAT LOVE THEM HELP THEM.. so talk to your babyfurry and look into soul together and you'll get some kind of peace together for sure working together !! Don't let the petfriend feel emotional harm as well. They Didn't Do it and You Didn't Either! :) I think the fact that assistants must hold the sore mouth open/pressure in bad spots and in bright lighting is hard but productive faster it is and harshness hardly as quick relief is coming … again ours didn't have and doesn't have any meds since the initial surgery necessitateds . Just bc its an industry for domestic animal care doesn't mean its suppose to be the only route open and shut or there wouldn't be this industry in the first place , as it developed form from being considered even in as late as the 60s to be obsessive to take a pet to a more properly reacting humanlike doctoring approach to pets. Well its more humanlike to expect same more proficiency and resolve as humane to pets todays world than when most of them even were in vet schooling. A CAT scan lol yes , CAT etc scans would be expensive to warden this seizure analysis is why getting stuck maybe.. so , try soothing things as of now.. and blood work surely. You could take a warm lintfree papertowel wetted with warm distilled water and touch it to her lips and see if she is okay and just it soothes and if she does want your attention that having been done try it again and the affect of this might well say yes she needs the light therapy..by caring experienced ., ours tell us that throat inflammation is not uncommon.. so ears would be the reactive area to the soreness.. Anyone that gets food caught between teeth always can tell as their ears even feel plugged almost too ! Teeth cleaning should always be rinsed extra thoroughly with calming cleaning mouth rinses and warm clean clean water followed with an antiseptic so the gums just actually bothered have chance to be calmed down / not give a headache kind of reaction.. so maybe that's also a piece in this too. Its Fine to get dental cleaning only if it doesn't make more soreness and that requires warm antisept afterwards.. pet or human.

I remember one desperate afternoon, so distraught trying to conquer during Christmas week my cat's real growling need during eating, I went to a store and bought some plaque removing fizzy powder for tartar .. it sortv sometimes eased things but then I had tried the warm papertoweling water thing.. squeezing the warmed distilled water with a COFFEE FILTER as the toweling bc it is no lint. I had no syringe any kind of thing and wouldn't do to squirt at her sore gums anyway.. so it was a clean hand and these clean clean things to squeeze warm water onto her lips let her lick it in.. I added only a miniscule drop of white distilled vinegar as is antiseptic purely so and completely so and of course digestible .. this was DO-ABLE !!! YUP, she was even HAPPY and slept OH SLEPT WELL !! and ate bit better … so that was a way I got along during my research and her able to communicate back too and we got along better and lovingly... so I do not know about good Foodgrade Hydrogen Peroxide for this.. HOWEVER, in my case with many crowns lol and even braces YUP hydrogen peroxide just touched and then rinse NOT SWALLOWED THIS TOXIC STUFF/ that touch against bad infected root canal needing aching molars YOU CAN STOP THE PAIN! Simple Enough! SO Yes, miniscule MINISCULE part of a drop of Foodgrade HP should be able to go on a toweling in warm distilled water dilution and help pain too !! Yes, its worth try/ but understand it MUST BE FOODGRADE DIGESTABLE as PETS WILL SWALLOW OFF LIPS INTENTIONALLY ABSORBING … DO YOU KNOW THAT CATS INTAKE THROUGH THEIR FUR ?/ Yes, and ANYTHIHNG THEY DO INGEST is VERY SLOW TO GO THROUGH THEIR SYSTEM/BODY.. like 3 DAYS and is why Vets give steroid shots for worth of like 2weeks at a time as it stays in cats bodies … they have a shortened intestine that I believe then uses other endocrine or organs as more like storage of the particulates and etc of the substances they digest .. so BE CAREFUL esp about essential oils even the lavender calming air freshner items as they might get on paws and licked.. you may be experiencing something environmental in your home ! ? the litter is no wonder sometimes too. So I use just white vinegar on the floors and bathtub post cleaning then again rinse it as my cats get into the tub , and if they make it a pit stop I can rinse it and no worries just in case better than any not! You'll get things simpler and improved , just try some more! :) Cats want it simpler too! and to Simply LOVE YOU no worries of money and fear just togetherness <3
