Advice Needed regarding a new addition....

Post by spiral »

We used to have 3 cats, two older Older ones (siblings, male and female), about 8 years and a younger one, about 4 (female). They got along for the most part and when the alpha male bothered the young female, she would simply lay on her back and swat at the male, and he would leave her alone.

The younger cat disappeared a couple of months ago, and recently we decided to adopt a new shelter cat. She is very docile and sweet, about 1 or 2 years old. Now, however the older cats refuse to stop going after the younger cat. I've taken to keeping the older ones in a locked bedroom with litter, food and water overnight. Obviously, this situation is very frustrating. During the day, if the alpha male starts to go after the new kitty, we've begun to use a spray bottle with water to dissuade him. The older female cat does not bother the new kitty much at all.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to how to change the alpha male's behavior towards our new addition, or will it just take weeks or months for this to resolve itself? Thanks in advance!
