Cat litter Problem

Post by pippacat »

My daughter adopted two cats a male and female just over a year ago. They have up until now used separate litter trays. But for the past few days the male has carried on peeing in his litter tray but keeps pooping in hers. Any ideas how to stop him doing this?

Is the female getting upset about this? Is it causing problems?

No - but just wondered if there was any reason as he wasn't doing this before .

Ah ok. If both cats are comfortable with the situation there's no need to stop him.

My two went through phases of using one each, or one for pee and one for poop, or sometimes a main one and a backup one. It may be that the location suits better for some reason which can change depending on circumstances or subtle shifts in their relationship or even if humans use the area where the trays are differently or at different times.

Problems start when the cats have issues between them and the tray becomes a silent battleground, a territory marking place. Then you're likely to know about it as other aspects of their behaviour will change and even the poop might change as one or the other holds it in for fear of using the tray or even starts going in other places. It's recommended if you have space to have one tray per cat plus one, in different locations - if you can add a third one it wouldn't do any harm.
