Please is there some1 tht can help me?, my little 7 year old male cat Hoggle suddenly developed cystitis 19th Dec 2020, been to vets 10 times and had numerous telephone consults also, the vet is now saying they cant help him anymore and needs to be put to sleep, I'm so upset, I was advised to get yurilieve in Dec which I did and hes been on loxicom for 2 months straight now, they also had him on Dantrium and hypovase for 5 weeks, no improvement at all, they gave him Amitriptyline which knocks him out but he wakes and constantly cries and paces around, he will wake up after afew hours, go do a normal pee crying loudly, come out of litter box then 2 mins later bk in to pee and this goes on for hours, until just fresh blood coming out, hes had urine samples taken and hes got lots of blood, protein in urine, also scan showed bladder wall was thickened, he was given a 5 day course of amoxiclav in Dec and he was bk to normal for 5 days, no symtoms, peeing normally, totally fine then a day later all started again, I was given a 2 week course of the same antibiotic mid January and it was fantastic he was jumping around, normal peeing, no crying nothing, a day and a half after the 2 wk course finished it all began again!, I've been on fone to vets 3 days ago and explained that through all of this awful time the only restbite my little boy is getting is whn taking the antibiotics so she said I will give him 1 more 2 wk course and after that theres nothing else we can do,??, SURELY MY LITTLE BOY ISNT GOING TO GET PUT DOWN BECAUSE OF CYSTITIS? PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME, IM AT MY WITS END, HES CRYING AND LOOKING AT ME AS IF PLEASE MUM, HELP ME BUT I CANT, IVE LITERALLY DONE EVERYTHING I CAN, I DONT WANT TO LOSE THIS GORGEOUS BOY, Pamela.

My cat had cystitis. Vet said it was due to stress. He was being bullied by another cat. Is your cat stressed at all? Something may be worrying him? Another thing that helps is diet. I try to give a wet food diet only. This helps increase their water intake, which will help the cystitis. Hope this helps a little. Strange that they would want to put him down. :/

Interesting that he gets relief from antibiotics, as the majority of cystitis cases aren't caused by infection. Have you been advised to change his diet? As his bladder is thickened, I'd also try something like cystease, which is designed to soothe the lining of the bladder, you can buy it online without a prescription, I get mine with a discount from Amazon, but think it is about £7 normal price, and think you can get next day delivery.

I would ask for referral to a specialist, as soon as possible. There may be so many things going on - underlying conditions, resistant bacteria, etc, etc - and at the very least you need to be talking with someone very knowledgeable, and more sympathetic than your vet sounds to be. Your vets may already have a panel of specialists known to them, or a University Veterinary school hospital may be appropriate.

Unfortunately water consumption is not that simple. Cat urine is supposed to be strongly acidic, remember they are a desert animal, and the pH balance is optimised for killing bacteria. Not enough fluids can cause problems by not flushing the kidneys, but too much fluid can also cause problems by diluting the urine too much and allowing bacteria to take hold. Cats don't drink much because their natural food is little animals whose meat is 80% water, and wet food holds that same balance with very little extra water.

Think I would definitely want a second opinion before writing off a healthy 7 year old cat.

My cat Hoggle is already on a wet food, he always has been, also some1 said in 1st reply about getting Cystese for him, I already give him Yurilieve which is exactly the same, does the same thing, hes been on it since December, also I cannot afford to go to any specialist, my vets is PDSA as I'm on benefits, I've pleaded with them to not give up on him, if I had any money I would of already of taken him in December, the PDSA literally said to me we will not be able to do anything else, this literally is ripping me apart, I totally agree with what some1 commented that a otherwise perfectly healthy happy little boy should not be put down, I appreciate any help or advice that I can get, this is his last chance, Pamela, x

Hi Pamela,

I see that you’ve already read my post about a similar issue I’ve had with my cat, Loki. A couple days after I made that post, I took Loki back to the vet and they put him on a catheter and keep him at the vet for monitoring for about 3 days. My guess is that the catheter removed a very small stone in his urethra, because he started improving a few days after the catheter. Although the vet said there was no blockage when they inserted the catheter. From start to finish he Loki suffered from this for about 2 weeks. Your situation with Hoggle sounds similar but different in severity. Loki didn’t have a thickened bladder wall. He never cried when he peed either. I know it’s not very helpful but it was pretty much a mystery as to what caused it and what ultimately cured it. I can say that he’s on Hill’s Science Diet for Urinary Hairball Care dry food, which I mix with wet food. I have a water fountain for him which cats tend to prefer and drink more from than a bowl of water. I’m sorry that I can’t be of more help, I just don’t know what ultimately worked for Loki. I would definitely try to get a second opinion if at all possible. Can anyone help you with medical bills? I’ll list below the medications that Loki was on, but again, I don’t know which one, if any, worked or if it was the catheter that did the trick. I hope your Hoggle gets better.
Claramax, Prazosin, Buprenorphine, and Saw Palmetto drops.
