New FIV positive cat

Post by Mags976 »

Hi all, on friday I trapped a stray cat that has been around here a while, he is very scared and not handlable atm but not feral. He has enjoyed a bit of a head rub and I can get a purr if I can get to him so just needs some time after been a stray for years I think.

He had the full works at the vet yesterday, neutered and bloods and the bad news this morning when I got the results back is that he is FIV positive.

The vet advised me not to keep him and after a few phone calls to rescues this morning the opinion was rather negative - it seemed like pts was the best option.

I have had more positive comments since though so in a better frame of mind about it and a lovely lady has kindly advertised him on here but he is black, battle scarred, semi feral and FIV positive with half a tail so not really jumping out at people for rehoming!

Anyway as the day has gone on I've started to dare to think I can keep him as iv read more, the vet basically said if I kept him mine would eventually get it and I wouldnt forgive myself if fraggle got it. I have 4 others in total and 1 can be rather aggressive at times but I have seen him outside with this cat and he didnt get too close.

Any advice would be appreciated! His coat is very thin on his head and he is rather scabby looking as well, I was sure there was something underlying but he has improved in appearance already

Hi and welcome to CC. Thank you for taking an interest in this poor lad, sounds like he has found a much needed friend.

I can't speak for taking in an adult FIV+ cat to a family of cats - I have no experience. But my boy Bob is FIV+ and I have five other FIV- cats. I am led to believe that the virus has a VERY short life outside the host and that it takes a bite to infect a cat. So, as long as the cats are not agressive towards one another I can see no reason not to take him in.

It is not always sweetness and light here. Grumpy Grace can lash out, but Bob generally doesn't rise to the bait.

It would be a very good idea to get him neutered - if he is not already.

You can get more information at www.FIVcats.org.uk Good luck and let us know how you go on.
