Insurance for FIV cats?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum - we're just about to adopt a FIV positive cat from the RSPCA and I'm debating whether it's worth getting insurance or not. I know anything FIV-related will be excluded but was wondering how extensive this is (I guess anything infectious could be written off as FIV related)? Are we better off putting aside some money each month instead?

Any advice would be much appreciated as we're completely new to this beyond anything I've read online.

Thank you in advance!

Natalie

UPDATE: In case this helps anyone else, I phoned up some insurance companies and in general having FIV seems to exclude mouth/oral disorders, infections/infectious diseases, gastro/digestive system disorders and skin diseases. Which basically seems like no plan at all! :| So we're going to go with the health plan at our local vets and just save an emergency fund every month...

Hi!

Also considering adopting an FIV-positive cat, so thanks for your post! Seems like setting aside some savings could be the way to go.

If it helps anyone, I think I found a policy that will cover pre-existing conditions (seemingly including anything FIV-related), provided that the condition has been treated or advised on in the past 24 months, though NOT within the past 3 months. Also excludes anything the pet is currently having treatment for.

Hi Natalie89 and Reb4002

Thank you for considering our little FIV+ friends - I have one and he is awesome.

Just to say I have insurance for my Orion through MoreThan and they've been great so far. The advice I've had from them is that, as long as my vet says it's not FIV+ related, then they will pay. And they have been true to their word: poor Orion had one vet trip self-induced by eating raisins and an ongoing issue with a blocked salivary gland which was drained, operated on and finally removed over the course of a year. And they even waived the fee for having him referred to a non-contracted specialist centre since I could not drive at the time and the nearest contracted one was over 10 miles away.

I hope you have happy and, above all, healthy times with your new friends.

Best wishes
Blue

I have recently adopted a cat who has FIV and his 4 weeks free insurance is almost up so looking at different insurers. When you guys sorted out your insurance do you need to let them know your cat is FIV+? Sorry all new to this and never had a cat who had FIV! Thanks in advance :)

Thank you so much to everyone who has posted about insuring a cat with FIV - your comments are very helpful! I am new to this forum and joined because of the experience of a friend who has been hit with a £4,500 bill which her insurers refused to pay. I was concerned because her insurers were the one recommended by the same rescue centre that I got our delightful 7-year-old FIV+ cat from. I have now thoroughly read through my own policy for Mr Tom and found to my horror that pretty much everything related to his FIV is excluded, and that's quite a lot! I'd be very grateful to learn if any of you have an FIV cat and have any good recommendations? I am nervous about leaving him without insurance, but it does not make sense to keep paying out this sum if the insurance is not there when needed! Thanks for all your help and for all the other useful posts.

Hi all I’m new here too!
I lost my best buddy a few months ago after months of caring for him. He was not an FIV cat but was not covered on insurance due to his illness being pre existing. It was both a traumatic and expensive time!
I am seriously considering giving a FIV cat a home so any advice on insurance companies would be welcomed.
Anybody with positive experience if you could let us know the company you used that would be great.
Thank you.

Ps - if any rescue or rehoming centres offer help if you adopt an FIV cat please let me know. I don’t mind travelling to places to see potential cats..

Hi there all, we've recently got a lovely FIV cat but now looking at this, for obvious reasons, did anyone find an answer out there? It seems the cat.org.uk says insurers class it as a new condition, but that seems confused...

Any ideas? Thanks and hello!
