Re-homing with a 13 year old cat

Post by Sonja »

I’m moving 1300km away soon with my 13 year old child and she refuses to use a litter box since she hasn’t been able to jump out the window anymore to relieve herself. She now wakes me up in the morning by meowing when she needs to go out. I am fully aware that the move to a new home and area (the coast) is going to be very stressful for her and I know what to do. My problem is, is for the first two weeks how am I going to get my child to use a litter box as I know I have to keep her inside the new home for the first two weeks to adjust to the new smells and all that? I’m PETRIFIED to loose her!

Hi Sonja.

I hope the move goes well.

There may be some information on Cat Chat's advice page for cats who don't like to use a litter tray: https://www.catchat.org/index.php/cat-t ... ay-indoors. I would also suggest you look at the Bringing a New Cat Home advice: https://www.catchat.org/index.php/new-cat-in-the-home; it isn't specific to moving but the advice to keep your cat in one room may help as you both adjust to your new home.

Is your cat FIV+? You may get more responses if this is posted in the Health & Behaviour thread.
