Help Needed

Post by Garni » Wed Jul 25, 2018 7:39 am

Hi. I hope you can help me. I took in a stray 3 years ago. A beautiful semi long haired male, who we called Smokey, and who my vet said was about 10 years old. I had him neutered and he tested positive for FIV. I had 2 other cats, but my vet said that shouldn't be a problem, which it hasn't been. He was so nervous, it took me 6 weeks to get near enough to him to take him to the vet, and although ok with me now, he's still nervous of others.
Anyway, just after taking him in, my son and his girlfriend (who live with us) found out they were having a baby. My granddaughter is now 2 and they still live with us. Smokey has suffered with diarrhoea for a while, but recently it has got worse and he now is messing himself while sleeping, despite being given probiotics. I do not know what to do, apart from the diarrhoea, he seems ok, so I don't want to have him euthanised, but I have nowhere he can be alone and I can't have my granddaughter coming across his mess. I'm at my wits end and Smokey is so stressed. I need some loving, caring person to take him in, preferably with no other pets, to give him the home he deserves for the time he has left. Can you suggest anything?

Hi and welcome. Poor Smokey, have you taken him to a vet to find out what’s wrong? I definitely wouldn’t consider putting him to sleep unless he was too ill. It could be various things including, stress, a reaction to something he’s eating, or disease, e.g. thyroid which is common in cats about that age. Three of my oldies have had that about that age and medication has kept it under control. Smokey will need full bloods including thyroid profile to check this, but it’s important it’s checked out. If you need to rehome Smokey and it is a medical problem then it’s better to sort that out first. Also if you do contact a rescue with regards to rehoming then check they don’t put FIV cats to sleep for no reason. Here’s some links below which may be helpful:

I agree with Janey. As an owner of a FIV+ boy, I just want to add my best wishes and say I am thinking of you all. Fusses to Smokey.
