Sadly, he left us this evening, and I hope nobody minds - I felt I should update this thread to complete the story. A suspected lesion or tumour on the brain left him increasingly more confused, and when he started having seizures it left us with no option but PTS. I'm grateful that it didn't drag on and he didn't suffer much - from us first realising something might be wrong to that last trip to the vet was just a week.
He was such a character, and I'm so glad he found us and we were able to make sure that his last few months (nine altogether with us) were good ones - comfortable, safe and happy as a much loved member of our little family. He spent a large part of the summer flaked out in the sun just outside our front door, where he could see if anyone went in or out of the kitchen and make sure he didn't miss out on any foodie happenings. His last night was spent asleep in his dad's arms, and his last afternoon asleep on my lap whilst I worked at the computer.
It was an absolute priviledge to have been able to help him, and even though we're both heartbroken I'll never regret taking him in and would do it all again in a heartbeat.
Rest in peace at last, Pugwash, you fought all your life and were the most tenacious little terrier of a cat that I've ever met. Never to be forgotten xx
