Hi there. Heres a scenario.....a person has cat befriend them, then keeps it as their own then after a year decide to get the police to come and scan it for microchip...it turns out that its owned locally...they tell them they cant keep cat and it lives local and dictate must be left free in area...is this correct??

I will explain further later. This is a story ive been peddled and im suspicious.

Sounds Horse-Feathers to me! What does the registered owner think? Do they know - do they care?

Something similar happened to my sister. In this case the cat belonged to someone who moved house and gave him to friends. The cat obviously was not impressed and moved in with my sister. She had the vet scan him, tracked the 'owners', who said it was up to the cat where he lived! She called him 'Yowlee' (because he does). She said 'I'm blowed if I'm going to stand at the door and yell 'Elvis'! (No wonder he left home )

At face value, it does sound a bit dodgy to me too! 'Left to roam free' is one thing, but who then is feeding it, who is responsible for its health?

It does sound odd. For starters. the police wouldn't scan a cat for a microchip.

Thanks for replies folks. I thought as much....all a load of rubbish. Person is a new aquaintance and Im shocked as they seemed so nice. They have recently moved to a new rented house and after taking the cat in keeping it as its own they have now done this. Im quessing the new dream house doesnt allow animals and this is the solution. Why would u bother after a year getting it scanned. She simply takes it with her doesnt she. Im appalled as 1.a cat lover and 2.being an owner of a cat that was left in the same situation by his previous owners. Abandoned. what do i do now? Now i know or feel sure that this is the case?

What nonsense! Only vets or an animal rescue would scan for a chip as far as I'm aware and they certainly wouldn't say let the cat run free, they would then get on with contacting the registered owner. Presumably the cat is not chipped at all but the person heard about chips and it sounded a good story to spin. Can you take the little one in for the time being?

I live 4m from place. I would have no clue where she might be in the streets area. Im prepared to go and look and mayb ask a few people. If I were to find her...big if...she would have to go to a rescue as I have 1 cat with permission of my landlord already. Actually it was a case of i have a cat if u dont take them then i find somewhere else. Theres no excuse. I have never been refused because i have a cat. Ive convinced landlords my cat is immaculate...he is..and theyve accepted.
