Is there a good way to keep Milla off of this one shelf?

Milla is the strangest cat I've ever owned, I never had a cat so expressive, so responsive, so...dog like before.
She plays fetch, responds to her name immediately, hates being alone like a dog would....and seeks the same amount of attention a dog would seek. I play with her a lot and she has zero interest in playing by herself, tying a string with a feather to something doesn't interest her even if the string moves and dangles, there has to be a PERSON playing with her in order for her to care, moving parts and stuff of toys don't interest her unless a person is there with her...she comes up to you carrying toys or whatever she deems is worthy of being a toy in her mouth and demands to play loud and clear.

I work long hours as a graphics designer and illustrator so as much as I'd like to play with her more it's never enough with her, if she isn't sleeping she demands attention or...else, and boy is that else something to behold.

There's a shelf behind me where some of my video games are, she climbs up on that shelf and knocks everything down, I rearranged it so she can't knock games down but she knocks everything else down one by one until you pay attention to her, if you shoo her off the shelf she bolts out of my room and in anger swiftly comes back, climbs up on the shelf, knocks something down and stares at you.

- I put tin foil there....she likes the tin foil
- I tried spraying her with water, she likes the water/doesn't care and calmly licks it off of herself
- I tried rubbing oranges/lemon pieces off of tin foil I put on there...she hates the smell but finds systematic ways to get rid of the tin foil and piece of orange/lemon and gets up there regardless....in fact she is doing that right now, pulling on the tin foil to make it fall so that the piece of orange goes down with it so she can climb up there and start knocking stuff off...and it worked of course

How do I keep her off of stuff? She clearly can't entertain herself and needs a person to have fun
oh and she likes watching TV too, but that doesn't last long.

My friends even the ones with cats just laugh and say they've never seen a cat like this and that she acts like a child....well I dunno how to deal with kids lol

oh and here's a pic of her I took on new years, she is gorgeous

and this one was a week or two ago not sure :)

don't worry nothing is wrong with her people always ask when they see this pic, it's just that the skin around one of her eyes is red/pink and gray around the other

I love this cat so much but man, she needs to let me do my drawing

edit 2: wow this cat is too damn smart
Since the lowest shelf smells of orange now, she doesn't want to go there but that doesn't stop her from trying to find alternative ways to get up to where the stuff she wants to knock down is, keep in mind if the stuff isn't there she still wants to climb up there.

She also only and exclusively climbs on this shelf if I'm at the computer and especially if I have headphones on

she sounds a lot of fun even if she's a bit of a handful - and she's also absolutely gorgeous

as she needs the stimulation, why not let her knock things off the shelf? move anything heavy or breakable, and replace with soft cat toys - once she's knocked them off she will probably play with them on the floor so a double exercise for her

adapting to our cats, rather than training them, is, I'm afraid, almost always the only solution to any cat-related problem!!

Lol - if your Milla was a smooth ginger stripey I'd say she was the doppelganger of my Molly!

Cats like this are a pain - but so lovable! I've just posted a screed about dealing with Molly on the health and behaviour section in answer to Atticuscat.

Yes, all we can do with cats like this is - adapt and enjoy!

They may be a headache but they're never a bore lol :)

Restricting access to her shelf proved to be a not so good idea.
I put a bunch of orange pieces and grapefruit pieces on there and she really hates the smell now(makes my computer room smell nice and fruity so I like it), she now sits in front of the shelf meowing but doesn't attempt to climb it...what she does instead is she started attacking me :)
for the first time in her life she climbed up on the back of my chair and started biting on me and scratching me, she really wants access to her shelf back.

Can cats really understand these things? Like that I was the one who put all that stuff there so she can't get on. I'll see if she gets used to it for a day or two more, if not I'll just give her back her shelf and let her knock stuff over, what can I do.

I already had non breakable stuff there for her to knock down, problem is she goes through it fairly quickly and reaches for the breakable stuff which I have nowhere else to put.

have you tried googling cat shelves, Joe? there's quite a few out there, and might just deflect her from the one you want to use

here's one idea, on special offer http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_ ... bed/366967" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

She has sooo many other places to climb, but she is obsessed with this one.
I cleaned up all the smelly stuff as best as I could but she is now more agitated and distressed around the shelf than ever, she wants up but it semlls and she's been meowing in front of it for an hour straight, I distract her and all but she comes back to it

I've seen some cat trees and stuff in stores but we don't have any suitable place for that kinda stuff, plus all the ones I see where I live seem very unstable.
I'm not ordering this stuff online, shipping and customs would be enormous to my country, either way she has plenty of climbing spots and now I made it so she can climb back here again, we just have to wait for the bad smells to wear off.

oh wait she is finally back up and knocking stuff over as I type this.

btw I tried making her a ball with food that would fall out of it from time to time, she wasn't interested, again she only plays with toys if someone is there to play with her.

I dunno as of late her attention seeking has been insane yet vets say she is fine

edit: Maybe she is in heat, if you guys remember when I got her my vet INSISTED that we don't spay her until after her first heat which is old fashioned by in order to maintain good relations with the vet I decided to go along with it.
She doesn't show any signs of heat tbh despite being 11 months old but maybe she just doesn't know how to properly show them and her constant wanting to play is it.
I know cats in heat become more affectionate and what not, they assume mating positions and stuff but she does none of that, she just seems to want to play more than ever and when you play with her she plays and you can tell she is having a blast.

edit 2: welp, she got her shelf back so she is happy now
what can I do I have to adapt now if only I could find her a toy that would entertain her by itself.

I usually play with her for 20-25 minutes every few hours when she is awake but she wants more
like say she is up and about for 3-4 hours, I take break and stuff from my work often to rest my eyes so I play with her which lasts 20-25 minutes or so but it's never enough as of late :)
Her sleep schedule is so that she is up and about during my work ours and asleep after I'm done working and she does not want to play then even if you try to make her.

Man I'm just glad she isn't stressed over the shelf smelling weird anymore
I should put those old pokemon and stuff pogs I had on there, she liked knocking those down one by one so that would keep her occupied but she lost most of them so I have no idea where they are now

Lol she does sound like my horrible Moll!

Moll's chief obsession is the clothes rack...I've caught her with a trouser leg in her teeth, yanking at it like a puppy and as for socks! Just now she's captured a big woolly sock, waving it about above her head and then throwing it away so that she can 'kill' it...

Couldn't tell her off for laughing...got to love them eh?
