Say hi to Sam
Say hi to Sam
After losing Lily 4 weeks ago, the house was so unbearably empty that I started haunting the rescue centre websites (through Catchat of course), and spotted Sam, staring at me from the comfort of his bed. And now, here he is!! He came home with me last night from the lovely Bentham & District Pet Rescue at Horton in Ribblesdale. He wasn't keen on the 1 hour journey - peed and pooped in his carrier within minutes but he's settling in really well already. He's a big bruiser of a lad, very affectionate (climbs up my legs for cuddles and purrs and paddles for England on my lap), but boy does he need his claws clipping!! I swear he can also bite through sheet steel, so I have to watch out for when he gets over-excited. He's still a little anxious (he was Mr Cool at the rescue), but I know he'll calm down, specially once he can go outside.
And when I can work out how :-p I'll post a picture. Just imagine a black panther with a little white star on his chest, and you've about got it!

Oh Anna, I'm so pleased for you. I did wonder if you'd take on another cat ..... or when.
Congrats and a big welcome to Sam, can't wait to see a pic!
By the way, if you're stuck you can send me a pic to [email protected] and I'll post it for you.
** also by the way, I'm really nosy and went onto their homing page - I believe I've seen him! He's 4?**

That's the one Helen, well spotted. He's huge, and something of a force to be reckoned with! . Hope to be bringing another one home in 2 or 3 weeks. Hope Sam will behave himself. She's very small and shy. (I always seem to end up with little and large/chalk and cheese duos!) Watch this space...

Re: Say hi to Sam
He's gorgeous, I can see why he caught you're attention. That level gaze does hint at quite a character within!
Ooooh, and another in the offing!! I hope that all works out as you'd hope. They'll never replace Lily and Mitz, but my personal view is that you've honoured their memory by opening up your home and your heart to another couple of cats, and rescue cats at that. I'm sure they'd approve. xx

Oh goodness he looks just like Hector, same unusual coloured eyes, what a beautiful lad. I did wonder when you were asking about collars whether there might be a newcomer to the forum How lovely after all the sadness of the last few weeks. Looking forward to hearing about his adventures as he settles in and of course the second new arrival.

Re: Say hi to Sam
Well done Mark, I don't mind at all. There's a couple more on there now....
Yes, he does have huge ears! Huge paws too. It's like having a black panther in the house. But he's settled in really quickly, and we're getting the hang of each other. He loves climbing up my leg for attention (ouch! I'm trying to break him of that habit) and gives me wet kisses in my neck when I cuddle him. He paddles like mad, and has really sharp claws(!!), so my legs and chest look like I fell into a gorse bush! His teeth can bite through sheet steel, as I've found out to my cost when he gets over excited. Never fails to draw blood. We have a "puncture repair kit" on hand in the kitchen, comprising surgical spirit, germolene and plasters! He head butts you while you're drinking, which gets really messy. Yesterday he wanted a cuddle when I was on the phone, standing a few feet from the work top out of his reach, so he simply launched himself at me!! Luckily he missed, as the grappling hook effect of his claws would have been agony! He landed somewhat unceremoniously on the floor, giving me a quick swipe on the way down. He's started shredding the kitchen door in protest at being shut away, so will have to get something to cover it up, probably a scratching post type thing.
I know it's been only a short time after Lily died, but we'd known it was on the cards for a long while, so I'd had plenty of time to prepare myself for it, and it's two years since we lost Mitz. Sadly last week would have been the 7th anniversary of bringing them home, and while I miss them both like mad, and wish they could have had longer with us, I'm so pleased we were able to give them a loving home for their last years, and we loved them dearly. So now it's someone else's turn to be sprung from Alcatraz to lounge around on beds, sofas and sunny lawns with us. (Although tbh Sam was so happy at the Bentham Rescue, which is a fantastic set up, I almost felt mean taking him away from there!).
Ginger Puss is being prepared for us, she's now FIV tested (all ok), and started her vaccinations, so I reckon she'll be joining us after Easter. She's quit petite and very shy, so will need a bit more help settling in, but both she and Sam seem fine with other cats, so I'm hopeful they'll rub along ok. Some new challenges ahead

What's Ginger Puss' story, is she from the same rescue?

"Watch those head bumps though, I lost a front tooth to Willow that way! ". Ouch!!
Ginger puss was found as a stray, having recently been spayed (shaved flank). She's not chipped, so they couldn't trace her family, who obviously cared enough to have her spayed. She's in a different rescue that specialises in strays, but she's very stressed there. She's good with the other cats and I managed to get her from rigid with fear to purring in about 15 mins, so I'm sure she'll come round once home, with some gentle and patient handling. She's about 18 months old, and I suspect very sweet natured, looking at way she was interacting with the other terrified pusses. . I'm getting the spare bedroom prepared for her, with hidey holes, comfy beds, gentle toys and high strength catnip!!

Re: Say hi to Sam
Hopefully it's just the rescue environment that's stressing Ginger Puss and once she's home with you and Sam has shown her the ropes she'll realise there's nothing to be nervous about. Looking forward to hearing her updates too
Sam sounds adorable, quite a character and he'll soon be ruling the roost I'm sure.
You know when you're ready to rehome, there's no right or wrong and Lily and Mitz I'm sure would approve.

Re: Say hi to Sam
I'm pretty sure you're right, it's just the whole rescue centre experience that's making her so scared. As she's in with a group of other frightened cats, I'm sure their fear just feeds of each other. I think she'll heave a sigh of relief when I bring her home and she has a bit of time and peace and quiet to calm down. Sam is such a gentle steady lad, I'm sure he'll help. (But fingers crossed he doesn't have a complete personality change when he realises he has a competitor for lap space!)
