Hi All x I need help ive recently put advocate on my 17 month old cat derek as I informed the vet that broadline didn't agree with him. All seems fine except he's not covered for tape worms and the vets will chatge me 38 pounds bi yearly for the treatment. I really can't afford this as I have another kitten (who we've started on broadline as vets recommended it). I love my cats and would go without but 38 pounds twice yearly on top of 8pounds a month for the advocate seems so expensive. I've been looking online and droncit spot on seems cheaper and compatible with advocate has anyone tried this? I'd rather ask here first as I know if I ring vets they'll tut tut and persuade me to buy the milbemax thanks in advance xx
Thanks nannymcphee I'll try that. Apparently the vets reckons I do need it it just seems so expensive and I can only find tablet form online which is cheaper but will cost a lot less. However giving it to Derek will be another problem x. I also feel tied as my pet insurance is void if I don't follow vets advice xx blooming pet plan grrr x
I don't understand how a vet can be charging £38 for a Milbemax. The normal cost from a vet is around £7 a tablet. I can only assume they are charging you a full consult fee just to give Derek the tablet. Milbemax are only available on prescription or from your vet though. Drontal tablets do pretty much the same thing, but are available online, without a prescription for about £2 each.
I don't think there would be any problem giving Derek Droncit, but I would allow a week between applying the Advocate and the Droncit. Highly unlikely, but I would double check the ingredients to mke sure they don't contain a common ingredient, to avoid overdose.
PS - I'm sure you have looked already, but Droncit (available as tablet or spot-on) only do tapeworm. Drontal tablets cover most types of worm, including tapeworm.
If you are unable to pill Derek, most vets will let you bring your cat in for a nurse to pill them for a nominal fee - nothing like a consult fee.
The other option is instead of using advocate, get the vet to supply Profender spot-on wormer and buy your own flea treatment online to do monthly, which is quite cheap. Either Frontline, or one of the cheaper Generic versions, such as Effipro. Or the alternative is Advantage spot-on.
