Best cat food?

My Dave is looking distinctly porky so I want to try cutting his food down a bit. I think, because he was a stray, I have fed him 'on demand' to compensate for his poor living conditions before I rescued him. Trouble is....he is far too demanding and I, being a soft touch, give in.

I cannot afford the special diet food but I was wondering which canned food is best for him. I know some are bulked out with grain etc and that is not good for an obligate carnivore who needs protein and fat. Dave likes Felix or Sheba's little pouches as a treat plus some Whiskas biscuits. Plus the odd rat :D

So which is the best source of protein. Whiskas, Felix, Sheba, Gourmet. What do you feed your little lions? Any advice gratefully recieved.

Some people rave about Butchers Classic cat food and that it is decent quality for the price. None of mine have ever taken to it. Might be worth buying an odd can to try.

Whiskas supermeat used to be a good one until about 6 or 7 years ago when they started putting cereals in it. Some of the supemarket own brand supermeat is cereal-free, so 100% meat, fish and byproducts (not necessarily bad, as lungs, tripe etc are low fat) A while since i bought any, but might be worth checking ingredients.
contain the highest amount of cereal of any cat foods. Harringtons has a much higher meat content, but still a good price. Ditto Supacat. (made by Burgess)

Interestingly our neighbour's cat would kill for Butcher's Classic, which I used to feed our stray boy - but all mine now prefer Felix. Butcher's class has no cereals and is a great food if they'll take it. Mine also like Feline Fayre http://www.felinefayre.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - purchased in Tesco or Asda.

It advertises as real fish and 60% pure fish and comes in two varieties - complete, or complimentary, food with no cereals - this must be more healthy. £2.50 for 8 sachets. A lot of the flavours are fish (which is a problem for cats that don't tolerate fish) but they also have chicken and chicken & ham varieties in complete meals. Might be worth a try. If a food is really tasty I don't think they need to eat as much...

I am quite wary of feeding foods that are nearly all fish, despite the claim that they are 'complete' - I have nothing to back up my idea, but I just think fish should be limited to treat meals - not least of all because of the issue with mercury and other heavy metals in fish.

My lot all like Butchers Classic, and the Feline Fayre too, but I tend to feed them quite a wide variety. To keep his weight down cut back on the dry food, and that is far more calorific than wet.

I just looked back at my previous post from Tuesday. I must have deleted some text before I posted. It should have said Whiskas dry, Go-Cat etc contain the highest amount of cereal of any cat food (and very little meat) as well as colourings etc.

Thank you all for your replies. I now have a list of foods for Dave to try. :D

I do tend to put dry food down for him if I'm away for a day so he can nibble. Maybe I'll just use it then and not as a daily thing along with his wet food.

At the moment, he likes Sheba or Gourmet in the little individual serving pouches but at £1:99 for six, it can get expensive. And it doesn't seem to fill him up.

Anyway, I shall give the Butchers Classic a bash first and see how he likes that. :)

Thanks again folks. I'll let you know how we get on.

Grace & Dave.

Mine like the foods in sauce, they really don't like jelly. Now that Whiskas Lick N Chew has been discontinued I have had to search for an alternative. I found Whiskas poultry in sauce, another whiskas one which doesn't even have a name (1.75 for 6 small pouches) and now something they like in the pound shop (4 large sachets for £1) - Whiskas rabbit in sauce!

Maybe just give him what he likes but less of it.. I could never get my cats to eat the high meat content foods which I thought they'd love, they, of course, had other ideas!

My Daz (aka 'Fatboy') has to watch his weight and will hoover up any food going, so I don't dare leave dry food out for them all day. They just get a set amount twice a day (half wet and half dry) and that's their lot, I'm afraid.

I bought a 6 pack of classic in Morrisons yesterday to see if the youngsters like it. Well they certainly like the jelly :) - I think most of the chunks ended up on the bird plate.

I noticed on the cans, that unlike most standard catfood that is very vague - ie 'contains minimum 4% beef', it says 24% of the named flavour - and yet it is cheaper than Felix and Whiskas. £2.99 for a 6 packs and sometimes on offer, 2 x 6 for £5

Graham, they had some boxes of Lick b chew in The Range when I was there this week. They were on clearance for about £2 a box. I guess they were the last of the stock

Thanks Mark, I don't think there's one of those anywhere near me. They don't seem to mind Gourmet Perle (3 boxes for £10 in Tesco at the moment, or 3.50 for one in Morrisons). One of the three will eat most things, the other two are a bit fussy, but will come back to it if there's nothing better on offer.
