What am I doing wrong?

I have just tried to post a picture - like I have done many times before, only to be told the max size is 256Kib. My 'picresize' is SET to 256KB and the actual photo is 232KB. I know I'm hopeless at maths but when I was at school 232 WAS smaller than 256! What gives??

Dunno - can't help as I always go by pixels with mine - 400 x 300. I'll try loading one to test the system:

I think the requirement is for the longest side to be less than 1000 pixels. This usually gives a file size of less than 150kB.

Thing is I have not done anything different to what I normally do. I posted some pictures on another site last night - no problems.
I will try again this afternoon, when I have more time and I am on my laptop (no photo's on this clockwork iPad!)
