Most ridiculous new cat food product to date?

I was in Tesco this afternoon. They have a new product called Gourmet soup. It is bits of fish or meat (I assume 100%) floating in a clear broth. It comes in miniscule 40g pouches @ 90p each. I might consider it for a cat that isn't eating, or convalescing, but otherwise...

https://www.gourmet-cat.co.uk/

PS - I see they already sell it in America as Fancy Feast broth.

Hahaha - I must be the only one that is happy about this.

Bagheera eats mainly biscuits and drinks a lot of water to compensate so in summer I often make a 'soup' for her just to make sure she doesn't get de-hydrated (it can reach 43 degrees here in the summer!). I mash up Felix as much as possible and add some water to it.

I'll have to see if i can get this soup delivered here!

I saw these for 78p in The Range on Monday. I was going to try one out of curiosity, but planned to get it if I bought anything else. By the time I had picked up other bits (all JWB 1.5kg bags £7.99 at the moment) I forgot about it.

Nowadays I don't buy my cat just any food that i see on stores. I really used to like trying new foods for my cat until Some time back when i learnt a lifetime lesson. It happened that I went on my usual shopping spree and decided to buy a new product for my cat, just out of curiosity. I was glad to feed her but surprisingly minutes later she literally vomited the entire bulk that she had fed. I saw my vet and he said that my cat's digestive system did not react well cause the product had a huge content of Tuna and it was the first time my cat was taking such. I had never had such an experience with my cat. He explained that i had to begin the transition by mixing both the current food with her new food together. Then, gradually decrease the amount of the current cat food while increasing the amount of her new food. I was then to continue doing this over a 7-day period. It worked for me but then I vowed to never again try new foods without doing enough research. I had to start identifying sites that would offer me perfect information whenever i need it. I've been able to discover http://www.0web.me/ which helps me find sites that comprehensively review products by relevance of date, cause newer sites tend to offer better information, from what I've gathered so far. Rushing to buy new products can be disappointing at times. But in case you don't have the time to do research or can't gather enough information, then transitioning slowly can result in fewer digestive issues and better acceptance of the new food.

They are on offer in Morrison's -5 for £2. Still a rip-off! :D

I bought 5 anyway. So far, Kylie has tried a fish one. She wasn't too impressed. I think she would rather have had her hi-life. :D

Ingrid and Kasper bother love their fish. I offered one to Ingrid last night. She sniffed it and walked off in disgust. I left it out overnight, so Kasper, Ingrid and Domino could have eaten (drank) it - but it was untouched this morning.

It'd certainly be far cheaper to just boil up a chicken breast and feed it with some of the broth, which is something I do for sick or convalescing cats, especially If I am concerned about their hydration levels! This stuff works out far more expensive than human soup ha ha ha! If stuck for time I'd try it for a sick cat I suppose..... If it were on special offer...... I do hope that it has "complimentary food" written on the packaging somewhere though.

As for veggie eaters, I have one who loves a bit of tinned pineapple and used to have a guy who would eat the broccoli heads I'd leave out raw for the hens! A good few seem to like the layers pellets also....... But the hens chase them away ;-)

Well, old thread I know, but yesterday bought some Gourmet for Mouse to take her glucosamine/chondroitin stuff in and included in the package was a free sample of the notorious soup, complete with 'whole prawns and tuna loins'.

Do tunas have loins? I googled 'loin' and got pictures of:-

A lion. A tiger. A lion, a lioness and a lion cub. A cheetah. A lioness. Some roast meat.

Reminds me of the time I googled 'lintel' and got...'lintel soup'

Good old Google.

I must say that though soupy, it wasn't as watery as I thought it would be, had plenty of bits, and Mousey ate it all up. All the large spoonful of it. But wouldn't buy it specially. Might be ok if you had one cat who needed tempting (smells quite strong and instantly attractive to Mouse, and presumably all cats) but oh no, not the veggie version. Fishy version ok, if you're feeling rich and indulgent towards your cat and want a convenience food :)

Whiskas do a "creamy soup" now. I tried it on my cat, who likes standard Whiskas pouches, but he wouldn't eat it at all. To try it, I had to buy a box of 12. The remaining 11 went into Cats Protection donation box.

It is "creamy," more of a sauce than a soup, with a reasonable mix of solid "lumpy" food. But he generally doesn't like foods in sauce. He will (reluctantly) eat things like Sheba, but prefers bog-standard Felix or Whiskas.

I saw that today in the Co-op. I was tempted, but none of mine will touch Whiskas.

Funny, but looking in the CP donation bins will give you an idea of what not to buy :D - Morrison's own dry food for starters. A woman I know who runs a wildlife rescue said that even hedgehogs won't eat it. She said she sighs when someone gives her some. She said the only use for it is for foxes.

Reminds me of when I volunteered for CP. One of the checkout ladies at Canterbury Morrisons saw someone behaving suspiciously. She couldn't do anything, but saw the same woman the following week. Sheput some Morrisons food in the donation bin and helped herself to some branded food. The checkout woman nabbed her and asked what she thought she was doing. She said she wasn't stealing, she was swapping - and that and that any food is good enough for some strays! - I wish I had been there, I would have force fed her Morrisons biscuits to see how SHE liked it!

The trouble with this kind of product is that a cat might really, really like it and if s/he is like Rufus,s/he'll hold out for more, and starve rather than eat 'inferior' food. I found with a lot of pouches, all kinds of brands, that my beloved Blake, and now Rufus, would eat the jelly or the gravy and leave the chunks. I found I was throwing away a lot of food. I got a blender which turned the food in jelly/gravy into mush, and Blake wouldn't touch it. I thought I'd try chopping the leftover chunks more finely and making more jelly with aspic - but can you buy aspic these days? Most shop assistants under 60 have no idea what it is. I tried making jelly with gelatine and a bit of marmite for flavour - remember I live on a very tight budget. Nothing worked. In his last week Blake took to Ocean pate - I forget the brand but it was one of those tiny tins that cost 50p but at least he'd eat all of it...
Blake loved tuna, and so does Rufus. I make sure it's tuna in spring water, not brine, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that tuna isn't good for cats. Is that the case? Rufus likes fishy food. Strangely, the one thing that he's guaranteed to eat is old-fashioned Whiskas, out of a tin, salmon flavoured. When I collected him from his previous home (his old lady had died) I noticed some of that in the kitchen so he was obviously used to it.
As I live on disability benefits I live in fear that something will happen to Rufus. I can't even afford insurance for him - another £10 or £12 a month really does matter. When I read how often some of you need to take your furry darlings to the vet I think. there but for the grace of god... My last vet visit cost £78, that was just for flea treatment and a shot to damp down inflammation/irritation (Rufus is allergic to flea bites) and it represented three fifths of my weekly income. My income, not my disposable income.
When the tabloids go on about 'benefits scroungers' living the life of Riley I wonder who they're talking about, or whether I'm missing something.

Oh good man Mark - Lil's just ordering a delivery and I like that bit of soup and the pouches too to take my joint supplements in, purrs and thanks from Mousey :D

ps She only gives me a spoonful of the posh stuff with the supplement - I have to chow down on Purina and Butcher's the rest of the time, I'd say grrr but I'm an angelic cat that only purrs, so the posh stuff is going to last a while, but she's going to buy it while it's on offer :)

We got some of that soup free with a box of Gourmet. It was rank, even the cats agreed ;)

B&M own brand is under £3 a box and is 100g pouches not 85g. It's the only food our fussy little eater will eat now. Happy days. :D

The most ridiculous cat food product I've seen to date is the Whiskas "meal deal" offer they do in Tescos (UK). I think it's something along the lines of a pouch, a treat and a cat milk.

I wonder how many cats stroll in on their lunch break to take advantage of that

By a coincidence, I've just been reading this:-

http://www.carnivora.ca/html/learning_c ... /index.cfm

A history of pet food marketing; though it's slanted towards dogs, a good many points apply to the cat food industry and to food fashions and advertising in general. I particularly like the story about the 'bowser rouser' - a subliminal whistle that claimed to make a dog run to the TV set while the ad was playing and bark to indicate his preference... and the marketing campaign by Purina that insisted that THEIR product would be way and ahead more popular with dogs than the current top-selling dog food in Wichita and Kansas...it was only later on that they discovered that the current top-selling dog food was made by...Purina

I'm not knocking commercial foods, mind. I'll never forget the time I cooked up a lovely feast of braised chicken livers for my lot, only to be met with puzzled stares and wrinkled noses. I've only to pick up the biscuit bag to replenish the dish, and they're there.

Makes you think, though :)
