Smithy - new pen resident

Post by Crewella »

Poor old Smithy seems to have had two owners die on him in his 6 years, and the neighbour of his last owner took him into the vets to be put down as he wasn't eating and, not being a cat person, they couldn't cope. Thankfully, the vet wasn't happy to do that, got him signed over and rang the rescue .... so he's now moved into my outdoor pen.

I'm grateful that spring is here as he's not a proper 'outdoor' cat, and I'd feel terrible if he was out there in winter, but he seems to have settled in OK. For a cat that was 'not eating' ........ he's not doing too badly, eats every single thing I give him (including his first meal on arrival) and is a bit of a chubster at 6kg. The vet reckons he should be about 4.5!!!

Lovely friendly boy, quite quiet and well-mannered - hopefully he'll find a home soon. He really deserves a change of luck.

Grief can affect you that way. Seems he was a much loved and spoit kitty. Hope he finds a new forever home soon.

Poor boy. Glad the vet refused to PTS and that you could help him. I wonder if he had just refused rubbish food, of if they had lied about him not eating.

Safe now (and couldn't wish for a better half-way house :) )

He's in good hands now. Sure he won't have to wait long for a new home.

I think he might have just needed some reassurance. He was a bit shy when he arrived, but not scared as such, and when I took him his first meal I sat with him until he came over for a fuss, and eventually he then went to his bowl and started eating. I sat and stroked him until he ate the second meal too, and then he was fine and got gradually less interested in me and more interested in his dinner when I brought it! Perhaps the neighbour, not being a 'cat person', had just put the bowl down and left him to it.

Smithy had visitors this evening! A lovely young couple that wanted a cat that would cope with being independent and them working in the week, but with the run of a nice garden and house. As he's coped very well with being out in my pen and not getting a whole lot of attention, I think he's perfect for them, and he even came out and rolled on his back at her feet.

They've said they want him, and just need a few days to prepare and buy equipment and stuff. Result! :D

Very pleased to hear it! :D Nice that he put on the charm at just the right moment.

I was feeling a bit sorry for myself this evening (nothing serious, just one of those days). Now I can go to bed with a big smile on my face. Nice one Smithy.

Hopefully they will pick him up this weekend. :)

I did wonder about him being alone whilst they are out at work, but from what I know of his character I think he will be fine. He has settled very well in 'solitary confinement' out in my pen, where I'm afraid they really don't get too much in the way of attention and entertainment, and seems the sort of cat who will happily sleep most of the day and make the most of the cuddles in the evening and at weekends, and he also seems well used to a catflap and doing his own thing. Needier cats are usually yelling as I come round the corner and tend to watch our every move when we're out in the garden, whereas Smithy is more likely to open one eye, shift to a more comfortable position and a fresh patch of sunlight and go back to his snooze. :)

Good on you yet again! When my mother died, her cat Brownie laid on her pillow, refused to move and refused to eat or drink unless I was there. I was literally on the train back to my home across the country when my uncle called to say she was back on the pillow refusing food. I had to get the train back again the next day and bring her to live with me. Sometimes all they need is the right touch/person/environment to recover from grief, much like ourselves. I am so glad the vet didn't end his days!
