Haven't watched the BBC clip yet - that looks interesting, but had to laugh at the scholarly result of the survey:

'The Cats Seemed To Know When They Were Being Duped' ...

You don't say!

Us non-scholastic cat-owners could have told you that, sunshine!

Nothing entertains a cat as much as something to chase, does it - even the dopiest or most ancient cat perks up at the sight of a jumping laser-light or bit of scrunched up paper. Cats are primarily predators and always will be. I do the lottery every week and if I daydream about winning the jackpot my first thought is always a big garden, a huge garden, safely enclosed, where the cats can roam safely and chase and mouse to their hearts' content, a cat paradise...oh well. Dream on.

We do a violence to their natures, don't we, deprive them of their sexuality, their atavistic need to roam and hunt, especially at night, force them to wear collars, all in the interests of keeping them safe, of course, and they still reward us with a lot of love. But in many cases they have to sacrifice a lot; my urban cats certainly do :(
