Move along, nothing to see

Post by Mollycat » Sat Nov 09, 2019 6:48 pm

So ... I just had Molly lying on my lap for 10 minutes this evening.

And??? So what? Cats sit on laps all the time and nobody makes a fuss!

She got up on the arm of the sofa and sat there for a while. I know the look so I sat back a bit, put a cushion on my lap, and patted it. She casually strolled across and stood on it, arched back and tail up, and I stroked her, then she carried on to the other arm. She repeated the whole sequence from the other side. Then she sat on the first arm looking around, yawned, washed her paws, thinking about things. Then she casually strolled over again, got on the cushion, turned her tail to me and lay down. Paws tucked under. Purring.

In six and a half years this is the third time Madam has been on my lap, and the two times before was maybe 4 years ago and she was very uncomfortable about it. I thought my partner's jaw was going to break it hit the floor that hard when he walked in and saw her there!

I've been there. I normally use a towel across my knees for the cats, Saturn likes to knead and has sharp claws so it is an added layer of protection and Tiggy likes to get under it, or at least between it's folds. Tiggy had been messing around trying to decide whether to come on or not, then Freyja jumped on the table beside me and walked onto the towel to see what Tiggy was doing, She didn't settle, but just stood there getting fuss, while i was hardly daring to breathe in case i scared her off. For some a cat sitting (or standing in Freyja's case) on a knee is nothing, but for some it is one of the most precious moments, and you never know when it will happen, and certainly never when it will happen again.

My two are more the sort who insist on lap space as often as possible, but I can imagine the pleasure of having a usually careful cat choose to settle there. Like being given a special gift of trust and affection.

Yes it is a huge gift, though the kind of cuddlebug Boo was has its own challenges! But yes, for her it's such a huge thing I can't really ... maybe just a little less incredible than say Coco and Chanel. I'm sure I scared her off by trying too hard to stay calm and relaxed.

Aww, its amazing what tiny things feel like such an achievement with these kind of cats, I felt honoured today as I was allowed to scoop the tray without being hissed at!
