i have a lot of ants in my garden in various areas at the moment, but i also have a cat and 3 children (one who is 3), can anyone suggest a pet and child friendly ant killer, are bait stations safe? What can you say about this?

You're right to be worried about the toxins in insecticides, both for cats and children. But boiling water should do the job. Pour it over the nest site, and do as often as necessary until you've got all the wanderers returning to the nest.
