Cat Litter

Hi, I am new to the group. We have a 5 month old kitten, we have cat litter box upstairs with a lid around it, although I have had to remove the flap as she doesn’t understand it. The litter box downstairs is just a small simple open box. The problem is that the upstairs one smells even though it is emptied regularly, is this because of the type of box? Many Thanks

the fact that smells are enclosed in a hooded box will make it worse, and some litters are better at containing smells than others - what type you using at the moment?
