A Tribute to Zoe

Posted on behalf of a dear friend and former CC member

My beautiful cat Zoe, She was 13 years old and a blue point Siamese. She was my best friend and a fantastic cat, so much more than just a pet. She crossed to the Rainbow Bridge on Sunday 6th April 2014 when I had to make the agonising ultimate sacrifice and let her go. She passed peacefully in my arms and is no longer suffering or in pain.
Zoes Story
On December 16th 2013 Zoe fell 3 and a half stories from her Daddys apartment balcony in Canada. She was busted up pretty bad, with burst discs among many other injuries and she was partially paralysed in her rear end. She was also incontinent. The first 6 weeks were a roller coaster, she was up and down but had finally started trending in the positive but she could still not stand unaided even though she kept trying. Over the next couple of weeks her Daddy worked with her constantly and she was showing positive signs. She started to walk with her owner supporting her back end but she could still not use her litter box. With the support of her vet, they started her on Oral Stem Cell releasers daily to help her body to release natural stem cells that the body slowly stops with age as the ‘matrix’ they are stored in hardens over time. At that point her owners were willing to try anything that could possible help their little girl. They investigated possibly getting her a wheelchair to aid her getting around but after speaking with the vet they wanted to keep that as a ‘last resort’ because by putting her in one now she may accept it too easily and it may hinder her natural healing and she could then just rely on the wheelchair. Their ultimate goal however was getting her to a point when she could walk on her own. Her Daddy was not concerned with the incontinence and was placing pads underneath her all the time. She would move off if she had evacuated and they would just change the pads. The vet informed them that there is no definable timetable to Zoes recovery and was in fact amazed that she was doing as well as she was. She was a real fighter and continued to show she was not ready to give up anytime soon. They also looked into acupuncture and laser light therapy.
By Sunday 2nd March she finally stood up on her back legs for the first time and started to walk on her own, only 4 or 5 steps before she stumbled but would get straight back up again this was brilliant news. The muscle tone around her back end, rear legs and tail had improved greatly and she was really trying hard, such a little fighter. Still had to work on the litter box issue but she was finally turning a corner.
Sunday 6th April she started to bleed from her rear end, she was rushed to the vet who after a lengthy examination confirmed that Zoe had tumours in her bladder that had finally burst. She was in a really bad way and her Daddy had to make the hardest and most heart wrenching decision to let her go to RB to stop any further suffering.
Her Daddy is in pieces and really finding it impossible to come to terms with her loss. She was an inspiration to her owners with her strength of character and enduring positive attitude to her disability. He is finding the guilt the worst though. Questioning the decision to let her go but we all know this is part and parcel of making that last final sacrifice for our furries.

RIP sweet Zoe, run free at the Bridge, chase butterflies and roll in the sweet grass. Free from pain and suffering, gone from this cruel world but never ever forgotten.

What a terribly sad tale of a very special and determined cat and a very loving owner. We live in a dangerous world, and we can't be there to protect our little ones 24/7, but your friend did all they possibly could to help Zoe recover from her accident. Sadly she was too badly injured, but she was loved and cared for right to the end, and that's the best we can ask for in such difficult times. RIP little puss, you will be greatly missed.

What a beautiful girl! An inspiring story, which unfortunately did not have a happy ending, but still a story of love and courage. She will never truly leave you while she is remembered with love. Night night Zoe, brave and beautiful girl.
