female rescue cat spraying in litter tray

I need advice on my rescue cat I adopted a couple of month ago. She is around 9 and super friendly with people, taking abitlonger with other cats but will let them groom her and will sit with them. This evening when I got in she went to her litter tray but instead of squatting as usual she sprayed the sides of the litter box ( some got on wall behind) then scratched the litter as she Usually would to cover it. The tray was clean and she is spayed, not sure who she did this ?
