Advice please - on rehoming

Post by mcbeal99 »

Hi - I have been advised by the RSPCA & Mayhew to join this forum.

Having contacted most of the rescue centres in my area, and been told that none of them can help me I am at a loss as to what to do. I have been told to avoid Gumtree etc.

I need to find a way out of this situation, whether by direct rehoming or through a rescue centre...can anybody please give me some idea what to do next?

Thank you in advance

I have two cats that need rehoming.

Both are tortoiseshell, 4 1/2 years old, good-natured females, neutured, chipped.

They are indoor cats, though do venture out onto the balcony when the weather is nice.

Having asked around, I cannot find a rescue centre willing to take one or both of them, I cannot even get on waiting list.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Mcbeal - where are you? If you give the area or town where you live, there might be someone on here who can give additional advice re rescue shelters/ workers - or even offer a home. Good luck with your girls, sorry you have to part with them.

Yes, where in the country are you? And as much info as you can give about your situation and timescales would be helpful.

Thank you for your responses.

I am in Central London, and am happy to keep them until a suitable home is found, though am unable to keep them long term.

They are sisters and it would be nice to keep them together if possible, though I realise that this is a big ask.

I have had them both since they were born, and still have their mum.

Chem (pronounced Shem) was the runt of the litter and is still quite small. She no longer gets on with her mum or my other cat, and to be honest I feel that she would be best suited to a home where maybe she is the only cat (unless she went with her sister). She is quite nervous and is overgrooming due to stress I think. She is fine if on her own or with her sister, but doesn't seem to want to socialise with the other cats anymore.

Deeley would be best kept with her sister ideally, though she is a sociable cat and would have no problem settling in.

I've posted links below for shelters in West and East London, in case there are some you've not tried:

http://www.catchat.org/adoption/londonw.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.catchat.org/adoption/londone.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If there really isn't any way you can work things out and keep them yourself (there's plenty of good advice available here if that might be an option), perseverance is the key - there will be some rescues that will put you on their waiting list, and some might help by adding your cats to their rehoming pages whilst the cats remain with you. Sadly, even if you do get on a waiting list it could still take some time as there are so many unwanted cats out there, all shelters are overflowing and you'll find more 'ugent' cases will be prioritised.

You're right to avoid putting them on sites like Gumtree, there are wicked people out there wanting free cats for deeply unpleasant purposes, but your best bet might be trying through friends/family/colleagues. Do make sure to check out any potential home carefully.
