Getting another cat???? Rescue or kitten?

Post by Scorpiomum »

I'm looking at getting another cat and can't make a decision.
I have had cats all my life.
I've had Siamese cats, but now have two British shorthairs.
One male (big softie) 1yrs
One female (shy) 5yrs
Both neutered.
I can't decide if I should get a rescue cat or a kitten.
Any advice from anyone?
Thanks. :-)

every cat is different when it comes to accepting, or rejecting, an addition to the family, but in my experience older females are the most likely to resent a newcomer

I don't think it matters what sex or age the newbie is - the most important thing is that he or she takes any hissing, growling or swiping in their stride without retaliating or running away

your best bet might be to consider what sort of cat your boy would be likely to bond with, as then your girl might not be pestered much and can leave them to get on with it, and while they're playing you can fuss your girl and reassure her

perhaps another boy between 9 months and 18 months might be the likeliest match?

Hello :-)

My advice would be, to try your hand at fostering cats if you possibly can?
If your foster cat gets on well with everyone then you can look at adopting it.
If there is too much friction between the cats, then you can look after it until it finds its forever home.
When I started fostering I already had 1 cat and didn't intend to have any more permanently... then I met Angel and she decided to stay with me forever <3

If fostering doesn't appeal to you (especially understandable as you have children who may become attached) then a rescue where the cats are kept in home situations rather than pens will be your best bet in my opinion - the rescue can match you up with the ideal cat, based on the experience their fosterers have had of caring for the cat in their home.

I hope that helps!
