Friend for our 3legged mitsy

Hello there, iv just joined the forum so bare with me if I post in wrong area etc haha.
Right, sadly 3months ago our little 3yr old kitty mitsy was hit by a car, she fractured both pelvises, dislocated and ruined one of her hock joints and loads of scratches and surface injuries. After weighing up our options and speaking to vets etc we decided to remove the rear leg that the hock joint was damaged. The little fighter is doing great now, she is now a house cat, until we move anyway but that's still not a certainty yet.
My question is this, although she is fine I worry she is lonely and bored in the house all day whilst we are at work. She used to spend many hours out in the fields near our cottage during the summer so I just want the best for her. She has toys etc but not sure this is enough.
We possibly would like to introduce another cat/friend for her. Kittens maybe too much for her yet an older cat may cause friction etc. Are we being silly? Should we, shouldn't we?
The new family member would have to be a house cat, we would love to give a home to a cat that may have other disabilities of their own, please any advice would be great.
We are a mid 30yrs couples with no children and live in Kent uk.
Many thanks guys.

Hi Chris and welcome to CC.

I think it is a lovely to get a friend for Mitsy and you are right to find a cat of a similar age. I would start enquiring at your local rescue homes. They may know just the right friend for her.

My Bob is a tripod and it hasn't slowed him down one bit. Like Mitsy he was use to having outside access and would explore the fields behind our house. We were told that after the amputation he would probably be an indoor only cat. But he had other ideas. We have other cats and keeping him in proved impossible (he got very stressed seeing the others outside). I know there are risks, but he is a happier cat for being outside. Last week I had to tell him off for being on the roof trying to get at a starling nest. OK it's a bungalow but still - the roof? with three legs?

Perhaps you could make your garden secure or give her an outside run so she can get some sunshine and exercise?

Hi there

Are you still looking for a companion house cat?

I am trying to find a home for my 7 year old - who I appreciate may be a little older than what you're looking for. I posted on another thread about her but unfortunately that poster's landlord decided not to allow pets, so I'm still looking for a home. The thread is here: http://www.catchat.org/felineforum/view ... =12&t=4670 As I mentioned there, Pixel needs a gentle companion - she actually gets on really well with my older girl and I often see them snuggling - and so it may depend on the temperament of your cat.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you're interested though, and also I should say that if you - or anyone else reading this - would like to take her on a trial basis to see if they can integrate Pixel and an existing pet, I'm happy to do that and will take her back if it doesn't work out. The right home is the number one priority.

P.S. Also very sorry to hear what happened to your girl, but I'm glad she's getting over her ordeal.

Hello,

Firstly, many thanks to you both for finding the time to read my thread.
Glad it seems to be a good idea to find mitsy a friend, she has lived with other cats before so we are hoping that she will take to it well. What a great story about Bob!!
We can't make our garden "cat safe" sadly due to the lay out of it but we regularly take her around the garden on a harness just to remind her of all the smells etc.

We are currently waiting on a reply from a cats protection group regarding a beautiful little girl of 5yrs old who has sadly had one of her front legs amputated.
We are hoping for news soon as see her as a perfect companion due to age and having the same mobility as mitsy.

I will keep you up to date.

Again, thank you for your advice and time

Chris.

Hello there again, thought I'd update you.
Sadly after a considerable amount of thought, the Forster carer of the little girl we were offering a home to thought it wasn't right for her to join us. Both the cats protection lady and the Forster carer said we said all the right things and were offering everything they wanted but sadly thought she may be a bit of a madam and be a bit too much for mitsy and should be an only cat. We respect their words so the search continues...
Now this may sound weird and strange but after the thought of having two amputees is swaying for us. The reason being after speaking to CP and Forster carer two cats that have similar movement and ability can work well as there isn't a dominant one regarding food etc. We would love to home a cat/kitten that may have been overlooked or needs special care. After helping mitsy through such an awful time we feel we would love to help another out.
How and where would I find a kitty that needs that extra little help?? Watching mitsy now is so satisfying that we can make her life as normal as it can be.

I'm sorry the adoption didn't work out, but it sounds as though it may have been a wise decision - it's worth taking a little time to find the right cat. Your best bet would be to contact some of the rescues in your area and let them know what you have in mind. If they don't have a suitable cat themselves, they may know of one.

It's lovely that you want to take on a cat that needs a little extra care, good luck in your search. :)
