Leaving cat and kitten unsupervised?

Post by Sarcazm »

It would make my life a lot easier if my kitten and cat could be left alone together. So I've had the kitten for 2/3 months now and during the day, when someones in, we pretty much let them do what they want, but at night, or if everyone's out we keep kitten in a seperate room with all his stuff. I'm nervous about leaving them alone together because although they get on fine, the kitten does like to "play" with the older cat when he's not interested and tends to get a telling off for his troubles. The older cat does the head biting rabbit kicks thing, which looks awful. My mind is wrestling with "well if he really wanted to hurt him he'd have done it by now, hes just teaching him manners" and "hes just so much bigger he could hurt him accidentally"
But I've got to let them be eventually, im conflicted, anyone have some advice?

I think perhaps you need to try and see what happens, the kitten needs to learn boundaries and a nip or a whack from the older cat will put him straight...

As long as their 'fights' are silent then they are more than likely play. Just do it, you are going to need to at some point and the longer you wait, the harder it'll get

I am going through the same thing. I have added two kittens to my two older cats. I did a gradual introduction and things seem to be progressing well. Lilly my younger cat is fine with them unless they get cheeky and try to take her food in fact when they angerd my older cat Beauty who started chasing one she started chasing beauty like she was defending the kitten.
Beauty as made great progress with them. shes gone from hissing at the mere site of them to general exceptance and only hisses when shes eating and they come close.
They are still learning their manners and so theres an ocassional show of whos boss by a chase or bop on the nose especially if treats or foods are involved.
Im sure they get on more when i am out as i often come back to find them closer than normal with a guilty look on their faces,
As long as your cat is not inflicting damage on the kitten or attacking it frequently i think its proberly ok leaving them alone together. the kittens likely to get more stressed being copped up in a single room than from the occasional lesson in manners which she needs anyway.
Try leaving them together while you stay quite in a locked room for say 30 mins or a hour. If they are ok then try while your out for a short time then gradually increase the time till your happy. If anything happens while your out it should be obvious by your kittens demeanour.
Hope this helps and hope everything works out

As someone who went through it with Ella and Archie, leave them to their own devices. Ella and Archie have never been close and Ella did, and still does, put Archie in his place. As long as others say the noises are not unbearable, they're just sorting out the rules between them
