A sad day

Post by Crewella »

Poor old Minnie has been with us for 19.5 years, and the last year has been pretty much kept going with steroids. I was thrilled she got to enjoy the new house and garden this summer, and she did really love the garden, but she's always had gut problems and over the last couple of days has gone downhill rapidly. She has the runs again and can't make it to the tray, she's so skinny that she has nothing in reserve and her eyes are sunken so they keep getting gummed up and I have to wash them. Which she hates.

She's barely eating, though I've been trying to tempt her with her favourite chicken, and I suspect this is the end of the road. I'm taking her in to see my lovely vet at 6.30pm, but I think she's had enough and I'm not too hopeful ..... a very sad day.

How sad. Hopefully the vet can pull something out of the bag to keep her happy a while longer. Fingers crossed for her

:( I'm so very sorry. It sounds like she's had a lovely year with you enjoying the summer though and no doubt a long and lovely life with you. If it's her time then it will be your final kindness for her but I'll be thinking of you and Minnie throughout the rest of the day.
Gentle fusses for Minnie from me.

So sorry to hear this Helen. I know you'll do the right thing for her, but even when it's clear it's time, it's still so hard.

She's gone. The vet agreed that she was weak and unlikely to pull back this time, and it was the kindest thing. She was the last of our original cat family that we had with us for 20 odd years, so it's also the end of an era. Thanks everyone. xx

Oh Helen. Sending you a big hug. So sorry. I remember that picture of Minnie and also the little video you recently posted of her. She definitely looked a lot younger than her years. You gave her the best life possible.

Sleep well much loved Minnie Xx

Dear Helen, I am sorry to hear this. Darling Minnie, what a wonderful old girl. It's lovely that she enjoyed a last summer with you. Big hugs to you and loving thoughts as Minnie enjoys meeting her litter mates at the Bridge. XXX

Julie - we will light a candle with you tonight. So many babies have gone to the Bridge recently, and I am so very aware that this time last year it was your beloved CC and Carol's darling boy, Harvey. Dear Alice, Shelly, Mischa all there to greet Minnie. XX

Thanks to you all for you kind words. I really don't know what I'd have done without the help and support on here over the last couple of years - it really helps.

We knew that Minnie was on borrowed time for the last few months, and it's only today that I'm realising just how much of our daily routine was built around Minnie. Letting her out and checking that she came in again, putting her food down for her every couple of hours and keeping watch so we could pick it up again when she'd had her few mouthfuls, kitchen roll and spray stationed in every room in case of 'accidents'. Poor old girl, in the last few months even when she made the litter tray, she was so unsteady on her feet that she'd stand in it and track it back to her bed half the time, but until the last couple of days her eyes were bright, she loved her daily routine, followed us around demanding food and I had no doubt that she had a good quality of life.

I can't say there isn't a sense of relief that we no longer have to watch where we put our feet when we come down in the morning and can chuck out all the mats that were down 'in case', but right now all that just makes the house feel emptier without her. I'm grateful that I have the foster cats to keep me occupied.

Had to wait until 8.15 - Bob was showing too much interest in the candle. It is flickering in the window now in memory of all the little ones, (and our Rosie dog,) who have passed to RB in the last year.

It's good that I can start to remember Minnie as she was for most of her life, and not be focusing on her problems in her last few months.

I lit mine too, and although it was a sad moment, it was lovely to feel that others were out there doing the same thing and remembering much loved cats. I lit one for Minnie, for Peaches and my original cat clan, and for other forum cats loved and lost. xx
