My adopted housecat is depressed

Post by mogadishu »

Hi there,

New to the forum, so hi all!

I've adopted a 3 year old house cat who grew up indoors, the couple who cared for her had a baby so gave her up.

She hid for the first 2 days, then came out and was super affectionate and seemed settled. Then about 4 days later, and she has become listless and seems depressed. She likes to be near us, but she just seems off and avoids being petted, no longer purring. I feel awful for her and wondered if anyone has had the same experience? She's not really interested in playing.

I'm wondering if I should maybe get another cat for her to play with?

Any advice appreciated...

Thanks!

I would try a vet visit first - it sounds to me as if she could be physically poorly rather than depressed

as for another cat, if she has never lived with another one before, it could be a bit overwhelming for her to share her new home and new humans at the moment - it could be worth considering once she is happy and settled again

thank you. i've been considering the vet, but was wary of uprooting her and scaring her...but maybe a checkup is what she needs, poor wee thing.

Hi there and welcome !!! :D

I am with Kay on this one, it sound like she may need a quick check up at the vet, if only to rule out any physical problems.

Please let us know how you get on, we are a friendly bunch on here :D

Hi and welcome to CC.

I agree with Kay, best to get your kitty checked out at the vets first. If the problem is behavioural I'm sure there are folks on here who can help.

Let us know how you go on.

Thanks all!

I've booked her in to see the vet this weekend. I shall let you guys know what they say - you never know what you'll learn.

Thanks for the replies, really :)

Agree with the others .
If she's not purring it could be cos she's feeling poorly. The wee vet check up will sort things out.
Hopefully it's something simple :D x
