Epilepsy

Post by MadCatWoman »

Wondering if anyone can give any advice/personal experiences. My 8 year old cat suddenly displayed signs on saturday of a seizure/fit. We were all out in the garden and suddenly T.J. started tottering about (almost like he was drunk), he was trying to dig a hole to have a wee and almost toppled over. No other noticeable signs apart from he just seemed a bit spaced out and not all there. We dashed over to emergency vets, he looked him over, took his temperature etc. and could find nothing wrong apart from the fact that he could not walk properly and was slinking very low to the ground. He gave him a shot of anti inflammatory, discussing what it could possibly be - been knocked by something, brain injury, epilepsy and we then went home. By the time we got home he was more or less back to his usual self and was walking o.k. The next day he was fine until 2p.m. when he started to display similar symptoms again. So we dashed over to the vets who again gave him the once over. This time they did a blood test to rule out poisoning amongst other things but this showed up nothing significant.

T.J. has now been put on epilen tablets, even though we are not completely sure that it is epilepsy. We have been given a months supply to see how we get on. In the meantime I have been reading on the net that a change of diet to grain free and using coconut oil/bacon fat oil has been beneficial to some cats suffering from similar condition. Can anyone share their experiences. The more I can read and digest, hopefully in the long run will help Mr T. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I have no experience of this, but just wanted to wish him well. The best you can do is keep a close eye on him and follow the advice given. I do try to keep the cereal content down in what I feed my lot, for all sorts of health reasons, so I do think it's worth looking into.

My youngest, Jasper, had his first ever seizures last week.
The vet has taken bloods and run other tests but expects that the causes are never really going to found.

Like you I did some research online and found lots of evidence that switching to a grain free diet helps so I'm switching their food from Go Cat to a grain free dry food and I'm also supplementing it with salmon oil. It can't do any harm and if it does good then that's all good news.

I've been told that coconut oil is also a good thing to add to their diet but I've not done that yet.

I've two cats, both Birmans, Jasper is 11 and Peluche is 12. Both have been in remarkably fine health until this reared its head with Jasper.

Thanks for your replies. He hasnt had a seizure since his second one nearly two weeks ago. I have put him on a grain free food and am giving him coconut oil which he seems to quite like licking so fingers crossed.

Is he taking tablets as well or are you just switching food and giving oil?
